Mythbusters Season 03 Episode 16
(exploding pants & fuel milage devices)

In this episode of Mythbusters, Jamie & Adam tackle some fuel saving myths & gadgets.

- Fuel Line magnets
- acetone mixed in gasoline
- hydrogen fuel cell
- miracle caburator

They used two cars, one with a carb engine and another with a fuel injection engine.

Test method was to fuel the car from an externally mounted bottle containing a fix amount of fuel and run the car on a dyno at 35mph & 55mph and measure the distance run on the dyno.

To summarize, all the four items FAILED to give any increase in fuel milage.

Also tested was filtered used french fry oil in a diesel powered car and it works with only 10% less milage than using diesel fuel.

Hmmm... acetone failed... that's a new one.

I'd expected a bigger drop in fuel-efficiency with fryer oil (because of the weight and impurities...) but 10% ain't bad.

Ang pagbalik ng comeback...

For this reason, I advocate the use of bio-diesel (or any bio-fuel for that matter) to help us become less dependent on oil-based fuels. Rudolf Diesel demonstrated his invention in the 1900 Paris World Fair using diesel extracted from peanut oil. It would be appropriate if we were to use bio-diesel as the inventor has intended it.
