CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -- Scientists have warned that the prices of oil will not just continue increasing; it will remain high.

This is no doubt a bad news in our energy-intensive civilization.

The discussion on the Peak Oil phenomena has been in the air for years, but nobody seems to be listening.

The same is true with Global Warming and Climate Change phenomena, that even with science speaking out now that it’s not something for science fiction movies to portray, but it is already a reality, not much is still being done even to just mitigate its impact.

Polar ice caps have melted in record time, so with icebergs in the polar regions. Even the coming into force of the greenhouse gas limiting measure the Kyoto Protocol is not enough to mitigate the impact of Global Warming and Climate Change. El Niño and La Niña phenomena have become our regular visitor. Storms and other climatic anomalies have become stronger and nastier anywhere in the world. Even as I write, the effect of El Niño in Mindanao is again starting to be felt.

For the same reason, the arguments of scientists about the Peak Oil Phenomena have been ignored, simply because decreasing our dependence on oil will give a big blow to the throw-away consumerist lifestyle of the rich countries.

Peak Oil and Global Warming and Climate Change, I suppose, are two sides of the same coin.

The news that gasoline prices may reach P50/ liter should not be a surprise to us, if we listen to science speaking.

Last year, everybody was disdainfully treating the statement of the Iranian Oil minister when he said in a meeting of scientists and major players in the oil industry that "very soon oil prices in the world market will surpass the $50 per barrel." But nobody was smiling when the prices of oil prices per barrel in the world market surpassed the $50 per barrel line in less than a year.

Now, some experts are saying it may reach even a $100 per barrel.

The reason for this is that nature is speaking up, like in the Global Warming and Climate Change events. We simply do not have enough oil supply in the oil fields anymore. It is even getting clearer now that oil producing countries like Saudi Arabia have over estimated their oil reserves.

Gone are the days when the US was an exporter of oil. Canada has also depleted its oil resources in 2003. These countries are now dependent on oil from abroad to maintain their throw-away energy wasteful societies. This is the truthful reason behind the invasion of Iraq. The US very well knows that Saudi doesn't have enough oil reserves now and colonizing Iraq has become a must as far as the US view is concerned.

Peak Oil phenomena is the point where the 50 percent of the world's oil reserves have been used up. And many oil scientists and geologists are now presenting volumes of evidence that 50 percent of the world's oil supply have been surpassed.

Not even the announcement recently of the OPEC to increase by half-million barrels their oil output per day can sustainably control the skyrocketing oil prices in the world market.

Further squeezing the oil fields of oil in order cope with the demand is not the point.

Science has warned that the issue it is not and it should be about using up all our oil reserves. It's definitely not about burning all the oil reserves for two major reasons.

Climatologists are now very worried that the concentration of carbon and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere due to too much burning of fossil fuel (oil and coal), the peak of the climate change event may not be gradual but abrupt. It may result in the abrupt desertification of some parts of the world and the freezing of other parts. It's impact on humanity may even surpass tsunamic proportion.

Geologists on the other hand are arguing that depleting the oil wells too much may result in some tectonic movements that may result in landscape altering and very disastrous earthquakes.

Simply put, it is Mother speaking out and we ought to listen.

By now, all our brains and resources should be trained on developing new energy sources. Vast renewable energy sources are waiting to be tapped. It is now time to not just call for the nationalization of the oil industry, but to focus our energy sector in developing renewable energy source. The call now should be the development and nationalization of our energy sector with the objective of developing renewable energy sources.

By now, all our brains should be trained on finding a way out of the crumbling neo-economic structure -- money has constantly lost its value anyway. Development now should not be measured in the language of money, but should be focused on the welfare of humanity.
