    ‘Indefinite’ fuel price hikes seen

MANILA, Philippines - Gasoline prices have now topped P60 per liter and, if the current pace of adjustment continues, will likely be near P70 by August.

Diesel, by the same reckoning, could go up to P60/liter, according to an industry official who said that oil firms can be expected to keep hiking prices every weekend based on crude movements for the month of June alone.

Crude oil hit a fresh record of near $143 per barrel on Friday, traced to investors moving to commodities following a drop in global equities markets.

A senior official in oil producer Iran on Saturday said crude could hit $150/barrel in the near future. A Reuters poll on Friday also found the respondents indicating that the extended rally still had years to run.

The Philippines uses lower-priced Dubai crude as a benchmark but according to latest Energy department monitoring, the average as of Friday was $126.99/barrel, $7.49 higher than last month and some $30 over the March figure.

    Indefinite increases?

"If [by] July, oil prices will be higher, then fuel pump prices will still be increased after August 2 to an indefinite date," the source, who requested anonymity, said.

Domestic oil firms again hiked pump prices during the weekend, the 17th such adjustment this year, by P1.50 for gasoline, diesel and kerosene.

Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corp. led the increase, followed by Petron Corp., Chevron (Caltex) Philippines Corp., Total Philippines Inc. and Unioil Petroleum Philippines Inc.

The adjustment put the pump price for diesel at P52.50/liter and unleaded gasoline at P60.96/liter.

The industry source claimed the price of diesel sold by the oil majors could rise to P60.48/liter by August, and that gasoline would cost P68.48/liter.

Other officials were not immediately available for comment. The industry has been tight-lipped after the Energy department said it was banning oil firms from making pronouncements regarding future adjustments.

    talaga indefinite yan.

the oil companies simply cannot catch up.

they raise pump prices by P1.50 a week while oil price goes up or down by more than $2 a day (usually up).

huwaaaahhhh!! nakakaiyak na talaga! sana, i-basura na lng yung oil industry de-regulation law eh. pero the senators/congressmen are somewhat helpless kase the control is in the hands of OPEC, and then the oil companies here. also, di naman bumabayad sa gas yung mga law-makers.. our taxes do. kaya i'm not setting my hopes high that they (gov't) will do something to alleviate our woes.

to the mods: sorry for ranting...

Breaking news guys... Oil companies will raise diesel prices up to P5.00 a liter tonight. Shell has announced that they will increase to not more than P3.00 a liter for diesel while Flying V said they will increase to about P4.00-P5.00 a liter in diesel prices. Not good...

Actually its not that high. Actually for unleaded its actually lower this week than last week this time only P1 increase for unleaded. However, diesel and kerosene will go up P2 (as I suspected, I was never a believer that diesel is cheaper in the long run cause its under-priced due to subsidies) and LPG will go up P1.50/kilo.

Fuel prices to rise at 12:01 a.m. Saturday
    07/04/2008 | 08:45 PM

MANILA, Philippines – Fuel prices will rise again starting at 12:01 a.m. of Saturday, according to the Department of Energy.

The price hikes, reported on Friday over 24 Oras, GMA's early evening newscast, will be implemented by the following companies:

Shell: P2 per liter for diesel and kerosene, P1 per liter for gasoline, and P1.50 per kilo for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).

Eastern Petroleum: P2 per liter for diesel and P1 per liter for gasoline, kerosene, and auto LPG.

Flying V and Seaoil still have P7 to P9 per liter that they have to recover to prevent profit losses. So they would keep jacking up prices at 50 centavos and P1 per liter every week through August.

Both companies, however, have not announced how much their increases will be, as of this posting. GMANews.TV

It is now slowly happening that the price gap of Diesel over the Gasoline is shrinking, eventually Diesel will cost more.

Diesel is so undervalued in this country because its subsidized. But at the end of the day the market forces will prevail no matter what the government tries to do. In other countries, diesel is EVEN MORE EXPENSIVE than unleaded. So sa mga nagbabalak bumili ng diesel thinking makakatipid kayo eh mag-isip isip muna kayo...

Market forces will not be stopped even the government can't stop it. Walang magbebenta ng palugi maskin magkagulo pa... Kung ako yung nagbebenta maskin mamatay na yung mga ibang tao diyan sa gutom basta di ako magbebenta ng palugi. That is how the world works, we all compete for resources, the strong shall live and the weak shall perish... You guys just wait and see, an oil executive has already told me such is the case in the future.

My guess here is that these public transport groups will stage another protest (picketing the LTFRB, transport holiday and the likes)....(but who knows maybe this will start the gradual decrease in public transport plying the streets) - "Wishful thinking am I?"

This maybe the mother of all the economic crises. People are changing their lifestyle already to cut expenses. Less driving, more commuting.

Many big companies are also feeling the pinch and soon they will be cutting their workforce. and when there are a lot of unemployed on the street going hungry...
