As petrol prices remain well above the $1 mark, many drivers are desperate to save. A new invention has been shown to save fuel in some cars.

Aussie inventor Shaun Rigby has come up with a petrol-saving device he claims could reduce fuel costs from around $1 per litre to just 80 cents per litre.

Dubbed the "Vaporate", Mr Rigby's device consisted of two strips of metal fitted to the fuel injectors in an engine, heating the petrol up before it was burnt to power the car.

"It's actually a known principle," Mr Rigby said. "It's been around for 20, 30, 40 years."
