Just curious and for the sake of comparison. which among the 1997-1999 sedans is the fastest? (considering they're all stock)

    1. Honda civic (vti) ph16 engine?
    2. Toyota corolla (Gli) 4afe
    3. Nissan Sentra (super saloon) Ga16dne
    4. Mitsubishi Lancer (GLXi) 4g92

base from experience and figures released from the manufacturers. which one is the fastest? If you're going to rank them in order, what would be the sequence?

If they're all going to race in a drag strip (considering they're all stock) who do you think will have the lead? If they go an uphill race, which one will have the edge?

And what is the point of this comparison?

^ just curious and to really know who performs better. this might also help buyers looking to get a second hand car.

There's really not much point... despite the differences in quoted horsepower, the performance of most mid-90's 1.6 MTs is quite similar. Hell, we were able to keep up with a Civic VTi 1.6 AT in my overweight and pig-slow Sentra Exalta 1.6 AT before in a full-speed expressway blat... and the VTi has one of the best engines out there. We kept up, that is, until he turned off his aircon and gained an extra 5 hp and started creeping away from us... didn't feel like turning mine off...

The differences aren't quite as big as they are now, with modern compacts having such big differences in weight and engine power.

    Ang pagbalik ng comeback...

As Niky mentioned, there isn't much of a point when comparing those cars. Especially if your point is supposedly helping 2nd hand car buyers. People buying used cars would be looking at fuel economy, reliability, ride quality, interior space, etc. Very rare would they be choosing based on their quarter mile times (and for those, the choice will usually be Honda).

And what does that have to do with what used car is good to buy? The one whose engine didn't blow up before the finish line?

well, back in the day (wow! I am old!) I have seen people drag race vehicles like the Kia Pride vs Diahatsu Charade or even vans like the Lite Ace.

Hmmm... Daihatsu Charade... swap in the GTTi engine (turbo Charade) and you've got a 1 liter car that can outdrag a Honda Civic.

If Kennon Road is on the cards and we're talking about stock cars, down to the tires, I'd put the Civic and the Sentra at the top of that list. This is the Super Saloon Sentra... the Exalta models completely lost the plot in the suspension department, the late 90's Corollas were way too soft (as stock) and the Lancer's handling at the time was just too numb. Of course, if we include the Mazdaspeed Familia and the Lynx GSi (which bowed in in 1998), the story would be a little different... the Familia had a great suspension and the GSi was even better, though it's not exactly powerful.

because of the DOHC engine, that's why... lots of torque...

they are correct, its quite pointless. but i have driven all of these cars, and i would say the civic could be the fastest.

I agree that it is pointless to make it a basis for buying a car, that there are different factors involved and each car has its own strengths and weaknesses but if i had to choose something to run (race!!!???) on Kennon Road then i'd buy the Sentra mainly because its a car i'm familiar with... although i'm sure those for-hire van drivers plying the Baguio - Pangasinan route in their L300s, H100s, Hiace Commuters and Urvans will still outrun most of the cars mentioned. hehehehe.

I agree also on the Mazda 323/Ford Lynx.

In the end, it still boils down to who's driving what. I'll vote for the Sentra driven by Niky... given he decides to turn off the a/c... hehehehe.
