The Ayala automotive arm got away with the marketing with Honda as a premium brand but it ain't going to kickoff in marketing an "affordable German" brand. Everywhere in the world VW cars are meant to compete with the Japanese brands.
There are only a few Jettas, Polo, and Tiguan on the road. You might even see more Golf GTi (due to its cult following) and Touaregs (good value proposition over its more expensive brothers - Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne).
that is what I also think.... sobrang mahal. but then agree it should be the taxes. baka more than 50% ang tax nyan eh.
Ang alam ko, "Volkswagen" means "people's car"
Pero rito sa Pinas,- sa presyo lang niyan,- aba e "rich people's car" siya...

I think the Polo HB 1.6L is manufactured in Malaysia. All the others are shipped from Europe or Mexico.
In the case of the Jetta 2.0TDI MT, it is priced at around 1.3M but when you look at it (inside and out), you will not see much value on it. It has fabric seats, dark-toned utilitarian interiors, manual reclining seats, and manual aircon controls. Compare that to the TOTL Mazda3 or Focus or Civic or Altis at 1.2M and you will wonder how much value these offer over the Jetta.

I got a jetta. drives very well. very stable even driving in the rain along the highway. you will know the value of your car once you own one. avg 14km/l on the dash. one liter of diesel cost 30 vs 43 sa gasoline. honestly, I've never driven any other car that can go up to 10km/ liter.
Or if you have a 90's car, 10km/L is hard to achieve too pag city driving
For me, if a car can do 10km/L in city driving without having to be mindful of driving style, that's good already.

My Innova does 13 hway, 8 city, giving me more than 10 per liter. Our bantam '79 Corolla 4k engine back in the day sips also at 10kpl. And that's almost 40 years ago.
Technology nowadays should have brought us near to 20kpl. Alas, only the Prius can manage that or better.
VW pricing is actually better vs the other European CBU imports. However, consumers do not notice as there's something very wrong with VW Phils line up. VW should have been marketed as an alternative premium brand instead of a value brand.
I mean with a limited dealer network, the most logical first step would have been to gain a following and beat all the other European "premium" brands in terms of value. Like launching their best models with complete options even if they will be more expensive than a comparable Japanese car because their cost of business will be higher anyway (e.g. having to import CBU from Europe).
I cringe when I think of Touareg with air suspension yet with manual seat adjustments at 4+ million pesos. Or Polo (or Jetta?) with manual side mirror adjustment like a 90's car. The Golf GTI was the start of something a bit more exciting but it would have been better if the performance pack and DCC options were also included. Or even better, launc the top spec Golf R nalang. Anyway, I wish VW Phils fires their product planners immediately before it's too late as obviously they do not understand our market situation.
I heard the Passat will be offered soon but if VW Phils releases it with limited options again (e.g. manual seat adjustments, textile seats) just to sell a bit cheaper, I don't know what to think of VW brand anymore...
I've ridden a Jetta as a passenger (friend of wife owns one). Nothing special except for the very thrifty engine as relayed by the owner (15-25 km/L). Even in my wife's opinion the current vios' interior looks better and more upscale.
During the VW launch in late 2013, I took a look at the Jetta TDI 5MT and was a bit disappointed. Aside from the bland and not-so-premium interiors, they had to tweak its power plants for the local market. I was expecting them to be rated the same as its Euro and US counterparts. The VW reps said the engines are the same but tuned for lower output (110Hp/208Nm instead of 150hp/320Nm). The worse part was when I asked for the retail price as they told me it will be 1.295M. If the Euro/US versions of the Jetta TDI DSG were sold locally for the same price, that would been a much better option.
In other countries, VW marketing is targeted at getting a piece of the Japanese product sales. They have the Audi brand to compete in the Euro premium brands. It would have been much better if they brought their cheaper brands (Seat or Skoda) to get into the mix of the stiff competition against Japanese/Korean brands in the local market.
ya, I also noticed nothing special about the looks. my cousin happened to book a test drive. but he cannot drive the manual. I test drive the car and fell in love with it. travelling at 100kph on the jetta seems 60kph on the vios. my previous car is a vios. stable cya talaga. handles the rumble strips with ease. less road noise. the diesel has less vibration than a vios inside the car. no offense...
