that is probably true. diesel engines are built more robustly than gas engines, and spare parts are probably more expensive because they are built more robustly.
but the question is, "just how often does the diesel engine break down?" after all, they are built more robustly...
well, mine have never broken down, after 4, 8, 10 years of regular everyday use.. that's over 100,000 km in one vehicle... and i have never changed a single part all that time.. just keep the air filter clean, replace fuel filter as scheduled, and change oil every 5000 km.

My 92' L300 never had an engine part break, that is for over 250,000+ KM.

I replaced the typical consumables but that is it.

Oh, I also replaced the radiator last year.

So if you can afford the Innova then go for it. In my case, I cannot afford the Innova (at the time of purchase), my wife refuses to ride the L300, AND the public transport fare (ALONE) far outweighs the cost of owning a petrol driven car.

My wild guess is that gasoline engines are cheaper to manufacture. Wonder why the cheapest brand new cars (Eon, Wigo and the likes) only have gasoline engines? 2.7 Gas Fortuner is cheaper than 2.5 DSL Fortuner, same with 2.0 Gas Innova compared to 2.5 DSL Innova?

Pwede yun sir. Mas murang e manufacture ang gas engine than diesel.. pero posible na kaya mahal ang diesel e dahil mas mahal ang nagastos nila for research how to use diesel more fuel save than before...

And according to what I read online,

"A diesel engine, fully optimized, has about 0.6 times the power to weight ratio as a four stroke gas engine."

Maybe this is the reason why small cars have gasoline engine.

i have seen some of these made-in-india cars.. (is the ertiga made in india?)
compared to japanese cars (toyota), they seem to lack... "finesse".. medyo magaspang ang ilang detalye.
i once saw a tata on the road.. brand new.. yet, medyo naka-angat nang kaunti ang bandang ibaba ng pinto.

    i agree.
it is also my wild guess, that gas engines are subject to less stress than diesel engines, and are therefore, cheaper to manufacture.
also, i believe that the low pump price of diesel fuel in this country, is more a product of politics than commerce or industry.
third, i think that gas engines spew out less pollution than diesel engines.

Agree. Diesel engines are high compression. They don't have a spark plug and they simply compress the fuel oil mixture until it explodes. Diesel engine blocks have to be strong to take this stress.

Most modern diesels have turbos and intercoolers which add to the cost. CRDIs run at very high fuel rail pressures which requires more expensive injectors and pumps.

Nung una maraming kumuha ng Accent Diesel for Taxi, but now most new Taxi's now are back to Vios.

    1. I wanna try a diesel engine.
    3. Kayang kaya sirang daanan like papuntang Baler -nasa driving skill din naman to hehe
    5. Parts availability and reliability ng innova -share naman daw parts ng ertiga sa APV and swift, e madami naman nang ganun sa pinas. Sana hindi makalampag ertiga after a couple of years

At ayun nga, kaya ng budget ang ertiga w/o compromising our wants. I think eto ang most impt 😀
