Hi ask lang po ng opinion sa mga experts...

We are planning to buy a family van, 7 seater. 1.2m budget. eto na lang po yung choices ko Starex TCI or Innova G both manual transmission po.

    Questions:
    1. ano po mas malakas hatak sa dalawa? baguio trips or parking sa mall like Shangrila or MOA parking.
    2. medyo madali maintenance?
    3. mas matipid sa diesel?
    4. mas mura PMS or maintenance?

    any other inputs are welcome.

    thank you.

    hatak= starex. kahit akyatan
    maintenance = innova
FC = innova (mas matipid starex kung CRDi kaysa TCI)

The one maintenance advantage I can see for the Starex is the TCI engine doesn't use high pressure injectors, and the fuel system won't be as vulnerable to bad diesel as the D4D or the Starex CRDi.

The Innova is the cheaper to own and maintain, but no way in heck can it match the comfort and spaciousness of the Starex. Completely different vehicle class. The Starex is a competitor for the HiAce, not the Innova.

    Ang pagbalik ng comeback...

Thanks sir Niky. Erase na kasi sa list ko yung HiAce Grandia kasi meron na yung 2 uncles ko. ayoko naman 3 kami same van hehe and parang 1.5m yata price tag ng Grandia. ayoko naman ng commuter. kaya kahit different class yung Innova and Starex eh yun na lang choices ko.

Grand Starex - mahirap sa parking(mahirap ring lumabas ng front seats in a tight parking situation)- namimili rin ng covered parking dahil sa tangkad, maluwag sa loob, matangkad sa kalye, a looker dahil malaking sasakyan, mas less ang body roll compared to the Innova kaya matatag sa mga high speed turns (like doing >100KPH in a curve)...
Innova - matipid sa diesel, madaling i-park, parang kotse lang ang footprint, I would imagine na mas malakas ang hatak nito compared the GS TCi, dahil nga CRDi ito at mas magaang ang body

Case in point, our TCi AT GS did 9Km/L(so a bit better kung M/T) while my brother-in-law's Innova Diesel M/T did 15Km/L on a 250Km stretch, from Metro Manila going up to Baguio

Features - halos pareho lang...Ooppps, may foglamps at remote (central) lock/alarm/speed sensing lock ang Innova G, - wala nito ang GS TCi M/T.
Maintenance,- halos pareho din lang, I would imagine for the first 5 years+, huwag lang may parts failure....

BTW, I own and drive a GS TCi A/T and an Innova V Gas A/T,- so the level of comparison.

While the Starex does have its issues... some kalampag and cheap plastic trim (which is an issue the Innova also suffers from naman), it's a pretty good van, very comfy and spacious. Rides a bit stiff, but nowhere near as badly as the Innova or HiAce, and it's not too difficult to drive.

    Ang pagbalik ng comeback...

mga sirs is it correct that D4D has timing belt while VVTi is timing chain?

I had that confirmed in the Innova forum bro....

Typically, I would be expecting a timing chain for diesel vehicles since it has a much higher operating temperature, but I guess the advances in materials engineering has addressed this...

So, timing belt for Innova Diesel; timing chain for GS TCi; (also timing chain for Innova Gas)....

FC - Innova wins hands down. Sobra tipid sa diesel. A friend who owns a Starex TCI said he only gets 5 to 6 km/l city driving. My Innova gets roughly 8 km/l city. Note that its mostly extremly heavy traffic and short distance trips. School traffic.

So far the only issue I heard about the starex is it eats brake pads and rotors.

Innova d4d uses timing belt. It has a timing belt light on the dashboard

I think in terms of operation and maintenance costs, the Innova would be at an advantage.

Size, loading capacity, ride comfort would go to the Grand Starex.

    Got a few Q's:
Will you always be ferrying the 6-7 family members? What's the composition of these 6-7 folks -- mainly adults? some kids? yayas? how about cargo? how else do you plan to use the vehicle?

Like CVT, the vehicles I have in the basement garage are a 9-seater GS and a 7 seater vehicle, of which the 3rd row is mainly just used for cargo. Though my household of 6 consists of a 3 year old, a 1 year old, and 4 adults (2 are yayas), hence we can fit the 7 seater, we take the GS coz it's more comfortable. As a 2nd (coding) ride, the GS might not make that much sense, especially if it's just me or me and wifey, but then we only have the budget for 2 cars, and 2 car slots in the garage. And the size, you get used to. It's actually pretty fun to throw around if you get used to the dimensions, and the fact that there are some drivers who won't want to try and outmuscle you.

    Hi sir IMm29
we have 2 cars, 1 for my wife and for me. medyo masikip na kasi sa car. me, wife, 2yo son, 1 on the way, 1 yaya. sometimes weekend getaway with my parents. parang sa gamit pa lang, stroller etc puno na cargo space hehe. I want sana GS because of its size, saktong sakto din pag sundo or hatid sa airport, worry ko lang yung maintenance baka mahirapan lalo pa manganganak yung wife ko.

anybody can give output sa PMS ng GS TCI vs Innova G, example 1k, 5k, 10k PMS. kung konteng difference lang naman baka pwedeng lumusot sa budget hehe

one more we plan to use the car for 5-10 years, ano kya mas reliable sa ganitong katagal.

    thanks!

main advantage ng innova dito is fuel consumption. kung 7 pax max lang naman ok na siguro innova. mas sulit lang talaga grand starex dahil sa space nya.

Masikip ang 3rd row ng Innova lalo when you are ferrying people taller than 5 feet.

Kapag bata, ok pa. Kapag matanda na, go do them a favor and get the GS.

If space is a requirement, GS hands down.

    *moxymox,
Since you have a day-to-day car, I suggest you get the GS. When the wife and I were starting out with just 1 baby, I used to drive the car in my avatar (a '02 Toyota Camry). Buti malapad, pwede yung child seat na hindi naman sobrang cramped yung nasa magkabilang gilid. So eventually, we used the Prado more when we'd visit the grandfolks. Then the kids became 2. So did the yayas. And the gear. So the 7 seater capacity of the Prado became 5 seater + trunk space.

In your case, since you bring the grandparents with you on getaways, in the Innova it'll be 2 adults in front, 3 adults ng 2nd row kandong ang 2 bata, and cargo space. Or at worse, it'll be 2 + 2 (with kids) + 1 yaya 3rd row. Luggage with the yaya in the 3rd row, and in the available space behind it. In the GS, I'm not sure if the TCi unit has the sliding or bolted last row, but you'll definitely have room for 9 adults AND cargo space. You and your dad can be in front, your wife, baby, elder kid and your mom in the 2nd row. And the yaya can enjoy the 3rd row. Hehehe!

And there's the airport angle pa pala....

In terms of maintenance, it's NOT a CRDi engine, so that's about 6 Liters of oil vs 8 L kung CRDi. Comparable to the Innova's i think.

Importante pala sayo yung space. Sobrang sakto lang ang Innova para sayo. Besides, the ride quality of the Innova is just so-so. 3rd row space is actually more cramped than the old Revo.

Kuha ka nalang ng Starex. Old school diesel means lower maintenance costs and lesser electronics to get worried with. You can install some light mods to improve power and fuel efficiency if you want.

Grand Starex TCI (M) or Toyota Innova G (M)
