Hello, I just need you advice on which of the two 2nd hand SUVs should I buy.
My daily drive is a honda city (no coding in our area). I will be using the car for out of town trips and some light offroading.
Already remove the Terra and Montero from my list since I don't like the knees up position in the 3rd row.

    Here are my priorities.
Space and comfort for 5-7 people (for out of town trips)
Offroading capabilities (though not really heavy offroading)
Which is better for long drive (engine performance and handling)?

I could stretch my budget for the 4v4 models but I don't know if it is worth the price difference.

AFAIK the MUX is more spacious than the Fortuner. Vastly more powerful too. Would be great to have 4x4 if you plan on doing offroading. All that ground clearance, chassis flex and wading depth would be for nothing if you get stuck in the mud! [emoji28]

exactly, though in our area (Cebu), its really difficult to find a used 4x4 MUX. I saw a 4x4 Fort for around 300k more. I'm not sure if its worth the price gap though. Will just be buying 2nd hand since I only use it for offroading and family trips

Well, the MUX is newer. I’d go for that. Both vehicles ain’t that quicker than your City anyway.

is there a local suv that has an honestly comfortable 3rd row?
sufing thru several reviews, the answer is a mixed bag.
i suppose that means, "...yes, but...".

I once sat on the 3rd row of the Fort for around 2hrs and its not that cramped as I thought. I'm 5'7" by the way, though you can really feel the bumps when there are just 3-4 people on board. Never tried the MUX though.

I'm 5'11". Tried sitting at the third row of the Fortuner, both generations. It is not comfortable for my knees and it is more bouncy so I get more motion sickness in the Fortuner rather than in the Montero. I can honestly only drive the Fortuner and never be a passenger. For the Montero, I can sit in the 2nd row but 3rd row is still a no-go for me. It is way more cramped (narrow side to side) in the Montero 3rd row. I still can't believe we fit 9 adults with luggage before in that car (packed light with friends for a 3 day trip up north). Never did it again.

I have no experience with a MUX but we have a Dmax 1.9 Cab and Chassis with the FB style rear. Not a fan of the dash design of the DMAX/MUX but it was a utility purchase anyway. No idea how comfortable the rear is or how bouncy it is compared to the Fortuner or Montero. It has more legroom per my recollection when I visited the showroom during servicing of the DMAX before.

EDIT: For TS, performance wise, the Fortuner 2.4 is adequate, brother owns a Fortuner current gen, can't remember if 2017 (the one that still had drums in the rear before they upgraded it the next year). Interior design is "better" if you ask me compared to the MUX generation you are asking about. The newer, still to be released in the Phils new MUX, has a way more improved interior. Going manual mode to control the timing of upshifts or downshifts, there is a definite "delay" of maybe about 1 sec, maybe a little more than 1 (but surely not 2 seconds) before it kicks into your desired gear. But if you know the timing, then you just "shift it" slightly earlier to up/downshift for your maneuver (overtaking, taking a turn/slope).

Still hate the brake tuning of the Fortuner as it lurches/leans forward when braking. Not sure if the change to disc front and rear has removed this imbalance in brake tuning. But this s one of the things I really hated about the previous gen and current gen that I have been able to drive. When you just gently tap the brake pedal, it doesn't bite well. Then as you depress it a little more, there seems to be a sudden hard clamp. There is no gradual increase, it is a simple grabbing of the front brakes with the rear not applying the same amount of force so the car leans forward and "down" due to it.

Lastly, the seats of my brother's Fortuner G specifically. The foam is definitely thicker than our family's previous gen 2011 Montero. Yet it is more uncomfortable to sit in. And this is not just my opinion but also my mother's. She prefers the cushioning in the seats of the Montero too. Not sure what was going on with that but I just hazard a guess it is the typical Toyota penny pinching where, no matter what they do, people will buy it anyway. I own a Nissan sedan which doesn't have the Zero-G foam. That has same thickness to Fortuner's seats (approx) and the foam cushioning/sitting in that car just also feels better. So I think it has to do with Fortuner's type of foam used in the seats specifically. I just find it offputting.

Just an update, decided to get a Fortuner. Took a while due to pandemic, just a question though, which variant is better?. 2016 2.4V or 2018 2.4G (same price), does the Disc rear brakes makes any difference? And also 2016 2.8V for another 200-300k, if this is worth the price difference, probably will get the 2.8V.

rear disc doesn't make any difference in braking power.. get the 2.4V, better interior, leather seats and power tailgate, auto power window on all 4 and all buttons are illuminated.

if the 2.8V will be in the picture, then i suggest the 2.8V bigger engine and 4x4 capability..

Just want to confirm, your question pertaining to disc vs drum brakes is because the 2018 model comes with disc brakes right? But the 2016 model didn't come with them yet correct?

Reason I know, my brother owns the current Fortuner and bought during the first year it was out in our market. It only came with rear drums then. I think after a few months my brother got his, they launched the "update" with rear discs already.

If you "may" be sensitive to "lurching" during braking, then I personally would prefer the disc brakes over the ones with drum.

Reason is, at any "Reasonable" speed within the speed limit, just applying the brakes on the Fortuner with rear drums, there is no brake balance with the Fortuner when they came here. It will lurch forward because the front bites harder than the rears. I really hated it when I drove it and it was uncomfortable for my mother who is a "biyahilo".

This can be treated as anecdotal but this is my personal experience driving the Fortuner with rear drums, even the previous gen, I drove my uncles and it suffers from the same lurching sensation when you apply the brakes because of the brake balance being immediate in the front and the rear "taking its time".

If that is not an issue for you, then yes the V added features are definitely better than the G for the little to no price difference that you are mentioned.

Toyota Fortuner V 2.8 4x4 AT vs Isuzu mu-X LS-A 3.0 4x4 AT: Engine and The mu-X's interior is quite comfortable, but it does have this utilitarian look to it. of use when loading stuff, then the Fortuner V's powered tailgate will help Isuzu MU-X 2018 facelift: BS6-ready & 1.9L diesel engine, slated to be. to my point of view Toyota Fortuner is better than MUX 3.0, thank you.

MUX. Fairly good 3rd row relative to other PPVs and comparable to Innova 3rd row (higher floor lang konti).

There’s a lot of options if you have the money. There’s the Explorer or CX9 in the 3M range. There’s the Expedition and Land Cruiser in the 4M range. I am not sure how much the Suburban costs now.

MUX has more power - torquey in the entire rev range and has power anytime you call for it. Also has more space - wider 2nd row and more legroom in the 3rd row.

However, it drives like a truck. Heavy and slow steering paired with so much body roll. Interior looks cheap too. Not fun to drive at all.

Fortuner is more matagtag but feels more civil to drive for me. Good low end torque but when you try to overtake and drive at above 3000 rpm you'll be surprised there's nothing there anymore. Personally, the Fort has a much better interior and exterior.

Between the 2, objectively the MUX is better but I just can't stomach driving a truck so my personal pick is the Fortuner.

I'm quite suprised on the power of the fortuner, I thought the 2.4 engine matches the Mux since it has more torque (on paper). Is the 2.8 engine better? Might also be looking at the 4x4 as suggested previously.

Don’t expect too much in terms of performance among these PPVs. A decent performing diesel would be the Koreans - Santa Fe or Sorento. Maybe a Land Cruiser or a Pajero BK will do fine. If you want a quick and fast diesel, check out the Euro SUVs - Touareg or X5 or Q7 or GLE.
