My 20 year old niece who's still in college recently went to me
for advice regarding a car she plans to buy. Its a 98 VW Polo
Sport Classic. Her budget kasi is only P100 thou (money she saved
from her allowance plus dagdagan daw ng papa niya, hehehe.)

I dont know much about this car so wala ako nasabi.Nakakita na
ako nito before and I remember na OK naman porma niya.

She doesn't like KIA Pride and the Nissan LECs kasi baka ex-taxi
    daw mabili niya.

Would appreciate any feedback on the Polo Classic. Also, what other
cars can you recommend for 100 thou? Thanks much!

exterior wise, mukhang mid-size kia-pride sedan!

i would recommend 1989-92 corolla dami parts, dami din makakagawa.. dali pang matutunan.. dali din set-up-an!

Thanks Sir A_Y for the info! I'll call my niece and read to her your
    answer.

Love niya kasi talaga yung porma ng Polo, but she should be
told about the pros and cons. Hope she'll consider also the
other car models that you mentioned.

mazda astina or mazda 323-familia(1998 model) yung pinaka bago sa listahan nya... basta tell her kung mazda kukunin nya, get the Manual tranny models, wag matic--matakaw sa gas ang matic ng mazda,e...

Sir Lui, can I have the contact no. of your barkada.

Ano raw pala color and ending plate number?

Used to own one. Common problem is the high tension wires. Dont know why but had to change almost every year. Hirap parts. Ewan ko lang kung nagbago na.

FC around 8 km/l city. Best ko was 18km/l highway at steady 90 kmh.

Engine is an audi. Hindi complicated ang engine. Carb and no electronics. Ewan ko lang parts availability. Important since 10 year old car.

Check the power locks.

I almost got one 5 years ago. Then I realized how I hardly fit on the driver's seat. It's not exactly ergonomically friendly for the larger folk. Otherwise, I think it's one fine vehicle. I have no idea about the availability of parts, though.

I'm sure personal preference regarding aesthetics is playing a huge part here, so I'm having a hard time joining in the recommending of the small body Corolla.

    re: Mazda Familia

I own one (GLX manual) and am currently hitting around 9-10km/L on the average. And I have a bit of an idling problem, as well as a small hole or two on my exhaust sa lagay na yan. I think the problem is inherent to the individual cars as opposed to the model itself. I've seen and driven gas guzzling Corollas, too.

With that said, it's going to be tough to get a really good car for 100k. Especially since the Kia Pride is not an option.

I agree with you sir that its really hard to get a good car for 100K,
but since my niece is still a student and this is going to be her first
car, a "low-end" type would be just right for now, otherwise she might be "spoiled rotten" if she gets an expensive car kaagad - at least thats what
her Dad said, hehehe (umiiwas sa gastos!)

I guess a young woman would fit nicely in the Polo's "small" seat.

I guess at her age, her basis for getting a car is the "porma" factor.
As long as the Polo has no "specific" defects, then pwede na siguro
as long as she's happy with it.

Nah. Parts are hard to find and expensive. My aunt used to own one and found it so hard to sell as nobody wants to buy it, plus she finds it too expensive to maintain.

I suggest for the same amount of cash:
    1997-98 Mazda 323
    1989-95 Toyota Corolla

I find these replies interesting because this thread and the replies remind me of my sister, baguhan driver kasi and she's still on her permit. I let her practice with the 1992 Corolla, she was ok with it. So one time we were both going out but she was being picked up, I told her to bring the 300D out of the garage and into the driveway (of our apartment complex). True enough, she said she liked it more than the Corolla.

Perhaps the threadstarter may also want to consider the w123 too!

The parts of the VW Polo are not that hard to find, you just have to know where to look.

For people up north, try Carabelle at Espana near Maceda. They sell VAG (Volkswagen Audi Group) parts at much lower prices than casa. The car itself is not that complicated to fix. Just make sure the mechanic has had some experience fixing Audi/Volkswagen water-cooled engines.

For the South, I supply OEM parts, but do so on an order basis.

I'm only offering advice here, and don't work for Carabelle! It was just referred to me.

See my ads or PM me if you want more info.

I agree 100% VW Polo Classic is a cool car..very reliable. Im not sure about parts availability but its still a cool car.

If she doesnt like a taxi car...then dont buy Kia, Sentra, Corolla, Mazda 323 and FX.

    My suggestion - Get a 1991-1993 Honda

Couple of my friends have Polo Classic pero they eventually sold it because of high cost of parts and the availability issues at mahal daw pag palit ng A/C. Sold it at around 150K that time pero they got it around 200K.

Pero the looks is good. Siguro my friend don't know where to looks for parts na mura. They look for parts at Buendia and at Araneta Ave kasi.

OK ba ang VW Polo Classic?
