    Toyota Vios 1.5S M/T 770K
    Toyota Yaris 1.5 M/T 730K
    Honda Jazz 1.5 A/T 838K
    Honda City 1.5E A/T 811K
    Suzuki Swift 1.5 M/T 725K

If you had to choose among one of these, which would it be? All are B-segment/supermini cars with 1.5 engines, dual airbags/ABS and manual gearboxes when available. All have MacPherson struts up front and torsion beams in the rear. Mitsubishi and Nissan have nothing in this segment, Hyundai Accent/Kia Rio doesn't offer airbags/ABS in any of their variants. The Aveo sedan only has a 1 and half stars Euro NCAP (crash) rating and is only available with a 1.4 engine, and the 1.5 Aveo hatchback is woefully underpowered (83 hp).

Toyota Vios S has full bodykit and upsized wheels, 107 hp with 5 spd M/T, a good driver's car, but is almost 3 years old, and center instrument panel IMHO, kinda dorky. Zero points on exclusivity, nowadays almost everyone, including the Police, and most taxi firms own Vioses. At least you'll never have problems with spare parts and reliability.

Toyota Yaris a lot cheaper, same engine and transmission as above, but also the same age and dorky center instrument panel. Less space than a Jazz, and rear brakes are drums. Somewhat rare, so some exclusivity.

Honda Jazz, excellent in almost everything, though 1.5 version doesn't have M/T. 120 HP i-VTEC, the most powerful (along with City). Fresh design (early 2009). 5-spd A/T with paddle shifters. The most expensive, 100k more than Swift or Yaris. No side guards (minor quibble). Nice-looking exterior. Trip computer.

Honda City, same as Jazz, though Jazz interior IMHO looks better. No M/T for 1.5 variant, no side guards (minor quibble). Second most expensive. Fresh design. Nice-looking exterior. Trip computer.

Suzuki Swift, good 110 HP engine mated to 5 spd M/T. Nice exterior styling (mini-like if you squint hard enough), though dash with integrated audio not that good-looking. Not that common so some sense of exclusivity, the cheapest. The only one with a proper temperature gauge and not an idiot light. The least amount of space among hatchbacks. Rear drum brakes. Questionable after-sales support. Relatively obscure Suzuki brand.

    Opinions please.

Price (buying and maintenance), reliability, fun to drive and after-sales support are main concerns. Secondary concerns are fuel economy, interior space, appearance, and resale value.

Is there anything else in this price range (or lower) worth considering?

    Thanks gurus.

I dont think exclusivity counts even for the rarest Yaris or Swift.

Its hard to find an exclusive car in that kind of price range.

If you want exclusivity buy, say a Volvo C30 or Audi A3 or better yet a Chana Benni ;)

Vios 1.5S M/T its pretty fast seller and you could get it fast with discounts and freebies try Toyota Bicutan since they offer very big incentives when you purchase the vios since its made here in the Philippines... Can't go wrong with spare parts too...

The Jazz is nice but Thailand import units have a long waiting list and limited availability..
The City is good but interior space is tight compared to the Vios...

I'll go for the City. Astig ang porma nya, Maganda rin interior. Binenta ko Vios ko for the City so far no regrets. Kung Jazz, Swift and Yaris, sa Jazz na ako.

    1. Honda City 1.5E
    2. Honda Jazz 1.5V
    3. Toyota Yaris 1.5.
    4. Toyota Vios 1.5S
    5. Suzuki Swift 1.5

    - according to preference. And uh, if you want add a lil' more to get a Civic 1.8V ( 850k M/T )

    - The jazz and the swift is the most fun to drive among the choices. after-sales would go to honda and toyota. maintenance ... hmm ... the honda is a lot expensive than of the tyt's

    - The yaris haven't changed really. Just the exterior and you wouldn't see it if you don't really look closer.

    - The swift is old but fast ( not as fast what others claim to be - 6 secs from 0-100km/h. WTF. :hysterical: )

    - The Vios S is great. Full of options but the 17" rims I think is too big. Dunno if the ride gets bumpy tho'.

I pick the Yaris in this category same as a Vios in functionality without the taxi/police feeling. Very spacious for passengers but lacking in cargo department. And very very generous in discounts so you could even get one below P700K for a 1.5L manual... The Honda's are nice, but IMO no longer good value for money as some class C cars are already cheaper than those class B's...

Yaris FTW. 100K difference between Yaris and Jazz, you can spend 50k for a OEM plastic body kits, and jdm rear tail lights to look like this. May sukli ka pa.

Meron issue yung C! magazine comparing Jazz, Yaris at Swift. Sa Maintenance ang pinaka mura is yung Jazz dahil sa 10,000 kms service interval niya. Sa space naman Jazz ang winner. Wala bang ilalabas ang toyota na 2nd gen Yaris? Luma na kasi yung yaris and katapat nya eh yung 1st gen jazz pa

Service interval can be done by filling it up with fully synth oil extending the pms from 5000 km to 10000 km. In terms of space, Jazz will win among the hatchbacks.

Yaris is not really an old vehicle. Remember that Jazz was here for years before Toyota introduced the Yaris. The Echo on the other hand was way ahead of its time (before gas price jacked up) so buyers are flocking to corollas and civics.

Still, the best bang for the buck is the Yaris and with 30k off the SRP, the MT will be below 700k already. Depending on your negotiation skills, you can have it cheaper.

Hondas on the other hand don't offer such discounts. Doing the math, Jazz will be 130k more expensive than the facelifted Yaris. If the Honda Jazz will be offered in between 720k - 740k for their 1.5L, I'll say Honda Jazz straight up.

As of the moment, no 2nd gen Yaris is in sight. Maybe it will be introduced by Toyota in the middle of the shell life of the 2nd Gen Honda Jazz.

Just for the hell, I wanted to know how a Yaris feels so I asked my friend who works in Toyota to let me test drive and keep a yaris S (sport package) for 2 days and this is my impression. I think its a O.K car, head room was good even at the back seats, leg room on front was O.K but the back seat ... love the cup holders Ill give Toyota engineers B- for creative locations ... Performance, I gave the 1.5 liter 106bhp a work out taking it to my usually runs, rev was weak don't even feel anything really moving till 5,000rpm, but sadly I didn't see why they called this S (sport) nothing is sporty about it at all.

So far it seems that the Yaris is the best deal of the bunch...not necessarily the best car, but the best deal. Unfortunately the Yaris has no S version here, unlike the Vios. The S version looks good. Sure, performance may not be a strong suit, but it's still good value.

The problem with Honda, is, well, it's Honda. Cost no object it produces the best B, C, and perhaps D and crossover segment vehicles. But it's starting to price itself out of competition. 100+ K difference between Jazz and Yaris/Swift? 50K difference between Vios and City? Sure, it may deserve the premium...but when every peso counts....

Honda reminds me of Sony in the old days. When you bought a TV a decade or so ago it had to be a Sony Trinitron. When you wanted a personal stereo a decade ago you bought a Walkman. Then Sony priced itself way above the competition, slowed down it's innovation, or tried to force it's own standards which nobody really adopted (Beta lost to VHS, the DAT and MD never caught on, and its proprietary ATRAC format lost overwhelmingly to the common MP3 format).

Nowadays almost everyone buys Samsung LCD TVs and Apple iPods.

Honda is basically doing a Sony by not offering a manual version of it's 1.5 City/Jazz, or even its 2.0 Civic, when there's a clear demand for it. If you're like me and you prefer to shift your own gears (or if you're like me as well, and a cheapskate when it comes to filling up with gas), a manual is your only choice.

To be fair, it may not be Honda itself, but Honda Philippines which may be the culprit. It seems bent in turning the brand into an upscale gentleman's car/family car rather than the boy-racer hot rod/hot hatch it's known to be elsewhere in the world. This is what gave the 90s ESi, SiR, City Type Z, it's mark. Nowadays, everywhere else except here, Honda sells Type R Civics, Fits, and Accords. Go figure.

Just my two cents worth. Don't mind me, truth is, I love Hondas. I just hate their price.
