Errh... Nissan isn't quite the paragon of reliability, considering there have been serious problems with the first generation catalytic converters on the X-Trail's QR engine (used in the Nissan Sentra SE-R) in the US... a problem which, thankfully, never occurred here.
And now, Nissan's issuing a recall for a whole bunch of these QRs in regards to a potentially fatal breakdown.
If we're talking about reliability, being both a former Nissan owner and a Ford owner, as well as knowing quite a few Kia owners, I'd say reliability at this point is mostly the same.
The Ford Escape's reliability was questionable on its first year release, but has improved to above average. The quality of the plastic in the tail-light assemblies was bad on the first batch, too... hopefully the NBX's new reflectors are better. But what is undoubtedly better is the 2.3 liter engine, in terms of both power and fuel efficiency. Oh, and it's the most exciting of the three to drive.
Kia, as a whole, is becoming pretty reliable. And the Hyundai/Kia CRDi system seems to be holding up well to local dirty diesel... so far.
Nissan's reliability hasn't changed much, although, admittedly, the X-Trail is of much better quality than the rest of Nissan's car (not SUV) line-up, which have too much Taiwanese content... because the X-Trail uses mostly Japanese components.
