personal preference... ako
Jazz > City; Fiesta HB > Fiesta Sedan; MZ2 HB > MZ2 Sedan; Rio HB > Rio Sedan;
So HB > Sedans ako.. unless you need the trunk talaga
To add, Yaris > Vios din ako, aside from everything sir renzo stated above.
Why? Mas maganda itusra eh. Cargo isn't a deal-breaker since hindi naman ako laging nagdadala ng maleta, and even then, the difference would be minimal unless odd yung proportions nung cargo.
Kung yung separation ng contents ng trunk from the cabin yung supposed advantage ng sedan, I beg to disagree. Ilang beses na kong namalengke na sobrang nangamoy yung sibuyas at bawang galing sa trunk into the cabin. So either way you'd still need to put smelly stuff in a cooler or other enclosure of some sort.
Oh, hatchbacks tend to have marginally better handling too, since they have shorter overhangs.
I usually tend to stuff maletas in the trunk whenever I pick-up a relative from the airport kasi hence why I chose a subcompact with a trunk than the ones who doesn't have one. :lol:
Agh. Now I want a Mazda 2. Liit lang din kasi niyan eh, that's why I chose a Vios instead. Frugality na rin siguro.

Generally, I also prefer the looks of the hatches over the sedans among current subcompacts. Pero IMHO The Rio sedan is among the few subcompacts that isn't eclipsed by its hatch counterpart in terms of looks. Kung sa cargo space, nasa kotse din yan. The Jazz may be a hatch, but cargo space versatility is better than the City's.
Sedan! .... you can stuff 3 dead bodies inside a Benz trunk .. :evillaugh

Happy nako. For sure eto ang pinakamatipid among subcompact hatches available in the market.
I think, there is one instance sa Top Gear Phil na mas matipid pa ang Mazda2 1.5AT sa Vios 1.5AT. Probably because of its inherit lightness in its design. I think the Mazda 2 hatch is about 300 lbs lighter than a similarly speced Honda Jazz.
One thing I like about Mazda is that they have always released both hatch (technically, liftback versions except Mz2) and sedan versions of their compact cars since the 323 (and even as old as the Ford Lazer) days.
However, everything boils down to preference than appeal. For one, contrary to popular consensus, I never liked the Civic EG hatchback (mainly due to its insane resale value for a used car buyer like me) but I liked the EK3/EK9 looks (never liked the EK sedans kahit SiR body).
Generally, I liked the sedan looks better than their hatch counterparts, with few exceptions like the Mz2 and Fiesta.
IIRC, here in Tsikot there was a post which explains that why the hatchbacks are more expensive than the sedan is because they have better, stronger reinforcement especially in the rear pillars/door hatches.
Hatch back ako.. Feeling ko mas madami kang malalagay na gamit sa likod, specially kapag naka flat na ang 2nd row.. The only time I miss a sedan, kapag may karga ka na medyo maamoy (like fresh shrimp)...
