been eyeing a sorento for my 'upgrade' but the other day i saw a relatively 'cheap' 05 explorer xlt (800+) and got tempted. what are your thoughts between the two? i'm not taking it off-road or anything, nor do i need a really big car. i'm just upgrading from my current sedan coz its the same coding day as my other car and i definitely need some extra space. family of four w/ occasional lola or tita riding on occasional out-of-town trips. TIA for your advice

The practical me says the Sorento CRDi. The Explorer is a gas guzzler and you might regret that...

dude, get the explorer. di naman yan ganon ka lakas sa gas.

before we hesitate to own a v8 powered ford because of the saying its "gas-guzzler" pero when we own one, hindi naman pala ganon. its how you drive, not what you drive.

explorer is more luxurious and elegant IMO.

    get the ford.

Sorrento....the XLT consumes an average of 3-4 kpl.
Tumataas pa gas ngayon. and it will not go lower. Maglalaro lang yan to at most 30 pesos/liter.

*memphis, yup, the sorento models were introduced here 04 yata, gas version. 05 was the start of the crdi version if i'm not mistaken

    Sorento CRDI.

    Diesel power & economy.
Plenty of parts (and cheap too).

Ford parts are expensive and rare. However, fellow tsikoteers might be able to help you to source those.

Try getting stuck in traffic driving an Explorer and see if you can get more than 2km/L.

With Diesel however, that usually doesn't change. Its economy exponentially improves on long drives. With a petrol engine that big however, good luck.

Overall, better ownership with the Sorento.

yes, but of a friend's XLT who owned one. in fact, one time, from QC going to tagaytay, nakaubos kami ng full tank. kasama na traffic dun. tama si horsepower, pag traffic, kitang kita mo bumababa yung fuel gauge, i think it really consumes around 2 kpl during heavy traffic.

And that also explains why the 2nd hand price of an Explorer is right around that of a Sorento even though the Sorento is cheaper brand new...

    Just a food for thought...

Just because a thing is on sale (or relatively cheap to buy) you have to buy it. I mean, is there a really compelling reason to buy it?

Since you already prefer the Sorento, things that might help you discourage to own the Ford is ownership cost---fuel, parts, etc.

Perhaps, the only thing I, for one, will consider buying, is when I will NOT be using this in MM horrendous traffic situation. Sa probinsya, siguradong may dating yan!

    Pangharabas? Sorento for me.

di naman ubos, siguro may natira na below 1/4.. hehehe.
i was the one driving, medjo may pagka heavy foot nga dahil naaliw ako sa power and comfort while driving.

pero on my lancer, a heavy foot is around 8.5 kpl compared to my econo driving which is around 10 kpl. laki pa rin difference....

tempting noh? one time nga i didnt notice naka 140KPH na pala ako sa commonwealth one time, scary expirience pero masarap.

To ts: i would get the explorer. FC lang naman downside na nakikita ko eh, parts marami may makukunan na mas cheaper sa banawe.

check the vin id of the explorer xlt, kung puwede sya e85, you have a future. our ford explorer is e85-ready. kaya hindi namin binebenta kahit hindi ganu ginagamit. at 17Tkm mileage, kahit ngaun hindi ako nanghinayang hiramin kasi mura naman e10.

    I've driven a 2005 Explorer Eddie Bauer for the last 4 years ( Purchased December 2004 ).

I think the full consumption of its V6 4.0 Gas Engine is a bit exaggerated. As with all cars the driver and traffic/route ( mountains vs. clear straight SCTEX ) has a very big impact on it. At 4 years old these are the FC figures i get.

    4km/Liter. Christmas Traffic Jam Traffic ( Think 5km/hour )
5km-6.5 km/Liter. This is the usual city driving.
7km-8km/Liter during long drives NLEX/SLEX. A bit even more if running economically. ( Aircon off, 80 km/h )

We its was new, I really expected it to be around 2.5km/L. A customer at the showroom told us that his 3.0 Escape got around 5km/L max and warned us that he heard that this thing gets only 2-3 km/L.

Anyway, I've gotten higher FC numbers than those when driving consciously / or setting the cruise control on 90km/h without aircon for clear NLEX/SLEX/Luzon-Mindanao Runs.

I think at 800k that explorer is a steal. I wouldn't want to part with ours even at 1.5M. ( market price is around 1.2m Max right now, I think). If that unit is in great condition then I think the Sorento isn't even comparable.

One thing though, if you choose to Explorer you will have to learn to be able to control the gas pedal very delicately. Aside from getting good mileage, you'll have to learn to respect its power. Its a big vehicle and you wouldn't want driving it into things. I've driven this to 220km/h and didn't even know that I was at that speed.

Fuel used is e10 at Que Ave/EDSA Sea Oil.

agree. same reasons. the Explorer Eddie Bauer is a very rare car to see on our roads. and when it's on the road, it commands respect. lalo na kung papasok ka sa Mimosa or sa Highlands or sa Fontana and other upscale golf courses.

i drive Santa Fe daily pero iba talaga feeling if I bring my dad's explorer. kulang nalang siguro dito blinkers, puwede na ko mag-legally counterflow tapos mga MMDA instead na hulihin ako, saludo.

at par na din sya sa mga naka exped, escallade lincoln and suburban. but of course, explorer ang cheapest hehehe
