Ford Focus Sports vs Mazda 3 Hatchback

I'm planning to buy a car for my sister. This is just for city driving and she is just a fairly new driver... She wants a hatchback and so far here are my choices.

This is the old Ford Focus Sports, the one with the Moonroof and Electronic seat adjustment.

Focus nalang...but why not consider the mazda3 2.0R, that should be the one being compared to the focus sport..para malapit presyo..

I'll go for the Ford Focus...

It has more rear passenger headroom & cargo room.

It has a bigger engine but is more fuel efficient because of its better power to weight ratio (and also better automatic transmission). Although if it's up to me, I'd rather get the Ford Focus TDCi for its engine alone! :2thumbsup:

It has the lowest NVH level among all econo compact sedans.

The ride is a bit better and IMO more suited for the road conditions here in the Philippines.

Having all these difference, I feel that the price difference between the two of them is very justifiable when purchasing the Ford Focus HB.

go for the ford focus 1.8 hatchback its much cheaper at 849k i think no sunroof,single cd in dash,but retractable side mirros with signal lights.. no rear aircon also..

if the price is not your concern ford focus sports features and specs speaks the price diff leather seat,better acceleration,better fc,moonroof, powered seat etc., by the way the price now of focus sports gas is 969T (999-30 discount)...

If we're talking brand new, there is some indication that the new Mazda3 1.6 is more economical than before.

The advantage of the 2.0 is that it'll give you the same fuel economy at moderate speed... in other words, if you like to drive a bit more quickly, the 1.6 will use the same amount of gas as the 2.0.

But if you take it easy, you can save with the 1.6.

Just curious, is the old 2.0L focus hatch (with sunroof) still available from the dealers ? Their pricelists now indicate otherwise.

yup its still available.. basically they just discontinued 1.6 ghia models..
new lineup now for ford focus is:
1.8l flexifuel ghia and hatchbacks
2.0l flexifuel hatchbacks and diesel hatchback..

If it's for your sister... The Mazda3 HB would be a good choice.

Between the two, you can save money on fuel cost. Both are about as flexible in terms of cargo capacity. Personally, I don't like the seats in the Mazda3 because they are NOT comfortable for long trips. The Focus seats are more supportive.

get the focus, look for popot at global city. smooth driving at lakas ng hatak. very roomy pa.

im looking at a preowned 2.0 focus hatch and a mazda 3 hatch and deciding which one is a better buy in the long run. here are some details about the cars:

ford focus 2 liter: 20k mileage, 2005 model, black, around 30k more expensive than the mazda

mazda 3 hatch: 29k mileage, 2006 model, gray

i really like the ford focus better coz of its styling, euro car feel and interior space. my only worry is the fuel consumption (one of my considerations) which is a bit higher than the mazda since it's a 2 liter car. for the car owners of both cars, what do you think is the better buy overall? how much fuel consumption are you getting for both?
is the fc difference between the two insignificant? i probably average 5000km a year for car usage. what do you think?

At 5000 kms a year... what, city use?

Consider around 6-8 km/l for the Focus 2.0... about 8-10 for the Mazda3 1.6...

Typical worst case / traffic scenario:
5000/6x50=41.67k pesos per year in fuel for the Focus 2.0

5000/8x50=31.25k pesos per year in fuel for the Mazda3 1.6

That's about 10,000 pesos per year in fuel. Up to you whether an extra thousand pesos a month is a big deal. Personally, I think the Focus is worth the sacrifice... the Mazda3 has a ***ier interior, but the ride/handling combination of the Focus is much better.

yup, i do mostly city driving (pasig to makati) and probably thrice a year out of town to tagaytay or subic. i actually computed the same figure which is a savings of around 10k per year which is quite a small amount considering the additional features of the focus over the mazda. we'll see...
