I'm planning to buy a new car in a few months. I'm thinking of buying either a lancer glx or a honda city. My previous choice was vios but most of the people I know have biases against it. Right now, I am more inclined to buy a lancer because of its affordability and good features/specs. However, its exterior is not that attractive or modern (the previous models look better). Also, motioncars.com has a low rating for the lancer. The 2009 city looks very cool but seems kinda small and a little more expensive than the 2009 lancer glx. Altis looks good also but the price is just beyond my budget.

Appreciate any input that will help me pick my choice. I have listed the features I'm looking for below:

    1. Safety
    2. Durability
    3. Fuel Efficiency
    4. Comfort
    5. Affordability

    Thanks.

Have you considered on the Nissan Sentra 1.3L?

    http://www.auto-searchphilippines.co...riceList1.html

You can buy one new starting from P600K. It is safe (it's a sedan), durable (basic maintence only), fuel efficient (as long as you don't push the engine too high or convert to auto-LPG), comfortable (spacious interior, good ride quality, cold a/c), and affordable at P600K.

    Looks good in black.

all of your criteria points you to the lancer. never mind the looks, its the features and the price that counts.

I did not see your post, so I started a similar thread. But it looks like we are looking at the same two cars.

    1. Safety

They both have dual air bags.
The Lancer has disk brakes all around, no ABS though. The City has drum breaks at the rear but has ABD and EDB.
    Both have side impact beams.

    Dead even?

    2. Durability

We do not have any Honda's. We have had three Mitsubishi's (1979, 1989, 1994, 1999). The first two were great, the last two, made us switch to an all Toyota line-up since than. It has been 10 years since our last Mitsu. Maybe quality control improve.

    3. Fuel Efficiency

The City would do better with the smaller engine.

    4. Comfort

Tried both, City feels more comfortable. I also enjoyed my test drive in it more.

    5. Affordability

The Lancer is cheaper *635K v. the 716K City (there is a City at 676K, but that has less features than the Lancer GLX)

I am leaning towards the City... the Lancer seems like a better bang for the buck deal.

based on your car line-up history mentioned on your first post, i am hinted to think that you dont keep your rides for a long time. if such is the case, add a 6th criterion - resale value. and that would point straight to the City.

if I were in your place and with only two options mentioned, i'd pick the City if i can afford the price tag. even if you use the price-difference-money of the Lancer to the City to dress up the mitsu, City would still standout, not to mention the pogi points of having the latest model car as opposed to lancer's 07 body model. kahit brand new pa cia, older model pa ren.

if you're open to other options, Sentra 1.6 Gsx is the way to go. Nissan has all-in deals that would beat any offer that Honda and Mitsu can throw at you. not to mention free bodykits that are really sporty looking. it's 730K last i checked. 14K higher than City's price tag but given the Chattel mortgage/insurance/tpl fees of honda, it's still cheaper. if you want the lower version, 1.3 as GH mentioned is the way to go. I have one for myself, and now that i'm hitting FC of 11-12 KPL pure city driving, i'm all smiles

    good luck in your decision!

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I'm still undecided. Though I feel I won't go wrong with either the City or the Lancer. Unless, there's any downside I don't know about. As for the Sentra, I've always liked it too. It's bigger, more comfortable and looks very classy. But I don't think it has dual air bags. And the audio is poor. Is this true?

The City wins hands down over the Lancer GLX. But if I were to buy a City I would only buy the 1.3 models because the 1.5 is too expensive for its class. Rather than getting a 1.5 City, I'd buy an Altis instead. Another car that I would consider would be the 1.3 Sentra A/T with all power options, this car is priced attractively and if you only need a car for basic transpo and don't really mind that its an "old model" then this is the car for you.

im into buying and selling 2nd hand cars... right now i have a 2006 Lancer GLX in stock (36tkms)... here's my review:

Lancer GLX -- more features for the money...
    1. bigger engine - 1.6L very torquey, i can shift 40 kph in 4th gear and 50 kph in 5th gear... no problem... nice/good power going uphill/mountain roads although against a City or Vios, the GLX engine is still a 1600 so it eats gas like a 1600... 9 to 10 km/liter city drive, 13 to 15 km/liter highway
    2. handling - i like the sharp, crisp handling... you can take corners fast and u-turn slots with fun...hehehe.... plus you can go over 140km/h and have steady, safe handling unlike City or Vios... above 120 km/h the handling is kinda sketchy and a little unstable (maybe due to lighter weight and smaller suspension setup)
    3. brakes - good stopping power with front and rear discs
    4. maintenance - right now (and yearly) mitsu has a promo... you can get an oil change all-in for P957! add 600 for new spark plugs... good deal for casa service
    5. resale value (used car)- pretty much the same price with a honda city

PS. anyone interested in my 06 lancer glx... just text me at 0920-989-0210... tnx sorry for the plug but i hope my review is helpful
