    Guys,

I always thought the leader in diesel engines is ISUZU but there are now 2 people I know that say HYUNDAI has taken over from ISUZU in diesel engine technology. They both said HYUNDAI CRDI is the best out there.

Is this true? I thought the ISUZU 4JJ1 is the best out there today?

I guess the criteria would be

Fuel economy (considering the same displacement)
    Low maintenance
    Durability
    Power

    Any input will be appreciated.

    Thanks

    Hyundai.

    Numbers don't lie.

Durability? Hyundai uses Bosch injectors (the best out there since it's German).
Power? Hyundai R 2.2L CRDI 220hp/461Nm (local version was detuned to 200hp).

Now compare these data to the 4JJ1 3.0L

    Hyundai.

They're more modern now and gives much more power than what Isuzu offers in their engines.

    HYUNDAI!!!

Isuzu reminds me of smoky, stinky and noisy diesel engines...

May i remind you sir that it's so easy to compare things in paper, but we're always missing the overall perspective in durability, injectors alone doesn't prove it all...The 4JJ1 engine wasn't built in horsepower alone but also for fuel economy...It was not only Hyundai and Isuzu that you can compare nowadays in diesel engine technology, and of course the much debated power...Checkout Nissan, Mitsubishi, Toyota etc., Maybe we'll see all the answers in the years to come which one stands out.....

    Hi Beta,

What can you say about it in terms of durability and fuel economy? Is Isuzu better then Hyundai?

    Fuel economy, ISUZU.

Durability is still yet unknown since CRDi technology has only been out for several years unlike the old-school diesels who've been out for more than a decade.

Speed and acceleration power goes to the CRDi equipped vehicles, for sure.

For CRDI type engines, injector durability is everything.

Modern engines can last well over 300,000 kilometers, if need be. But modern high-pressure injectors often fail long before that.

While I put my faith in the durability and long-term use of Isuzu's old-school overhead valve 4JA1s and 4JB1s (have one close to 200,000 kms, and two others at around 170,000 kms plus), Isuzu's more modern engines use Denso technology for their common rail system. Even in Europe and Australia, Denso systems have a bad rep (guess who else uses Denso? D4D problems, anyone?), and the Bosch systems are considered king.

Old Isuzus and Nissan Patrols with the Denso high pressure systems have numerous problems (and these are not just limited to the 4JX1. There are rumors about the Alterra now). Some Toyota Denso owners are on their third fuel pump. Hyundai? They use Bosch. One member here is still on the original injectors. Even after being "Ondoy'd". At 300,000 kilometers. Now that is impressive. I've only ever heard of one or two injector failures stories for Hyundais, and they were old Starexes with over 150k kms.

Nowadays, it's no longer enough to cite the brand of the car... with boutique specialists like Bosch, Siemens and VM Motori (they make the Captiva diesel... pretty good diesel, that one) taking more and more responsibility for engine technology, you often have to ask what particular subcontractor/supplier built the engine and engine hardware.

This thread needs an update. Nag improve na ang Isuzu engines, dba? The FC of their pick up is really impressive, going 30 km/ lit. Talo pa compact car diesels.

Strange indeed that ISUZU's 3.0L only produces 148 HP

But what about Hyundai's fuel consumption? I heard Isuzu Alterra gets approx 13 km/liter city driving.

There was so much apprehension connected to CRDi injectors when the technology was new a decade ago. But look at it now - with hundreds of thousands of CRDi vehicles sold to ordinary motorists who are typically not OC with maintenance, we still see a lot of these CRDi diesels on the road that are over a decade old.

May differences pa rin in terms of power output & noise levels, but emission levels of Isuzus have improved a lot.

Interesting yung European D-MAX 1.9, while the rest of the world get the detuned version, sila higher output na, Euro VI compliant din without AdBlue.

Meron ka bang HP & torque figures compared sa local version? Yung 1.9 kasi is not spectacular, but it gets the job done.

163PS/360 NM for the European RZ4E, matching the older 4JK1 twin turbo, but with 40Nm less torque.

Better diesel engine, ISUZU or HYUNDAI?
