I’m contemplating replacing my 2011 elantra GLS1.8AT with the new suzuki vitara GLX. I’d like to solicit your opinions if you think the move is an upgrade or a downgrade. Vitara’s bells and whistles are really attractive but I’m thinking I might miss the bigger space and higher HP of the elantra.
    TIA

    Thanks Sir for the suggestion.
Apparently, Elantra still trumps the Vitara:

    Elantra: 88.1W/Kg
    Vitara: 80W/Kg

If you can afford to keep the Elantra and buy a new Vitara, then go for it. The Elantra will still be a better drive over the new Vitara.

I can think of 3 ways this can be considered an upgrade:
    1. Upgrade to a higher vehicle/SUV thus a better ride height.
    2. Upgrade to a newer vehicle which are generally easier and cheaper to maintain (given that they are almost at the same price point) versus an older vehicle while factoring warranty.
    3. Upgrade to a better perception of people around you given that you have a brand new vehicle.

If any of these 3 motivates you to replace your Elantra, then go for it.
Personally, unless my car is already masakit sa ulo, business/family needs, or the replacement will be cheap because of company car benefits and the likes, that is the only time I will replace my existing car.

    1. whypo? i agree with dos. is your current ride giving you problems?

    2. upgrade or downgrade? who cares? it's your comfort and convenience that you should be thinking of, po. unless they're contributing to its purchase and maintenance, don't think about what the others say.

    good luck.

I’d like to think of this as an opinion survey. I have regard for tsikoteers’ insights, particularly on car matters, hence I put forward this question.

Of course the decision (and payment) will be mine to bear but I see no harm in hearing what others have to say.

Main reason why the idea crossed my mind is the age factor. I’m still happy with my elantra and it’s still a looker and performs well as far as I’m concerned.

I’d like to think it’s well maintained (I only take it to the casa for regular PMS and my typical route via SLEX allows me to give it an Italian tune up) but I’ve already logged 75K kms in it and inevitably, wear and tear will take its toll.

I don't think a car with 75k KM with mostly highway miles will have that much wear and tear unless the owner has no regard for maintenance. I have logged 49k KM on my three and a half year old Fiesta Ecoboost mostly doing SLEX routes and it is still as good a drive when I had it new.

The thought crossed my mind Sir. Secondary to budget consideration though is space. I prefer to have my cars kept and maintained inside a garage and adding one will already exceed its capacity.

Because it seems that you are not that attached to your car emotionally/sentimentally for now and you also mentioned the age factor... my question is why "just" a Vitara?

Don't get me wrong, I love the Vitara's specs and we were once a satisfied owner of a Suzuki, but why not save a little more (well maybe a lot more) and target a vehicle where you would not double doubt yourself if you indeed got a higher level vehicle. Besides, your Elantra is still working pretty fine.

If the subdivision you live in allows street parking outside in front of your house, then it would be just fine. We have limited garage space so the other cars are parked on the street outside the gate.

If you can afford a bigger CUV or PPV, then go for it. It will surely be an upgrade of sorts compared to your Elantra.

On the contrary, I love my elantra that’s why I posted the question here to get “unattached” opinions.

We already have a PPV and a CR-V may be on our horizon 3 years from now. It so happened that the elantra is the one that’s next in line if ever we decide to buy a new car and we found the vitara’s features a good value for its price point, that’s why the consideration.

Now I get what you mean. To clarify my previous statement, what I mean for attachment is something where you would not sell a car regardless of the reason, something like a keeper until it reaches vintage stage (e.g. a keeping a 90's corolla with more than 400K kms, even if you already have a top of the line Innova and Fortuner).

Unfortunately my opinion is quite medium to long term. I'd rather postpone the replacement of the Elantra, save-up fore several years, and buy the Subaru STi or Golf GTi... or atleast the WRX. Besides, we have different priorities and factors with which we would be happy so maybe the long list of features of the Vitara is enough to justify replacing your Hyundai.

To answer your question directly, I believe the Vitara is an upgrade, but not by much.

Any car with 4 doors and a trunk is called a sedan, whatever size it is.

Some of the best-designed vehicles on the road are sedans - Accord, WRX, Evolution, BMW M3/M5, Merc E-class, etc.

I'd gladly take a Civic or Mazda3 or Jetta over the new Vitara.
