Best 1.8L compact I can think of is the Elantra. Its currently the newest in the bunch, has good looking yet unconventional looks, and has the performance and efficiency to back the looks. Sure the FD Civic is still among the greatest out there but the new one's coming soon, there are droves of these on the streets and the ride is slightly harsh. However, the 1.8L Lancer EX is said to be coming soon and we'll have to see about this one.

More inputs/feedback please. I'm planning to replace my 1996 Nissan Sentra SIII with the best 1.8L in its class.

Elantra just won the North American Car of the Year award.

You can also check the Grand Livina. I read in some reviews it is fast. Topgear should make a comparo of all cars in this segment.

I'll go with the Elantra for modern stylish look. For the safe side, I'll go with Altis.

I'll go for Elantra GLS, a bit of bias of course because I own one. The Car of the Year Award is just a bonus and supported my belief that I made the right choice.

Why Altis for the safe side? What do you mean of this??

Well, I guess Retz was talking about the common notion that a Toyota is always the safest pick, what with the solid reputation of reliability, economy and all that.

But I will reiterate my opinion that the Elantra is the best choice, especially after being supported by the picky North American motoring scene. Sure it may not be the sportiest one out there but well roundedness is the thing that we are looking for.

New Civic is not good. Honda executives are even admitting it and they will be releasing the next gen Civic earlier by one year.
