how old a car is acceptable?... You can try looking into a 1997-1998 Nissan Sentra 1.4L. Your major headache as with any car of this age would be worn out bushings, etc. Expect to spend some extra cash to replace worn out parts. Another thing to consider is the expensive components like the aircon compressor. If it hasn't failed, it will soon fail. If it has failed and fixed, how was it done (replaced with a surplus or new unit?).

Go for the Sentra Super Saloon Series 3. Malakas A/C, all-power and parts are relatively cheap.

Actually you can find 1997 Nissan Sentra 1.6L Super Saloon for around 180K but I would suggest you to find the 1.4L version because it is cheaper to buy and gives better fuel millage than the 1.6L.

If you buy 2nd hand, it's best to get a car 20-30k below your actual budget. In your case, 180k, so 160ish would be a safe bet. Then save the rest of the money for repairs. Getting a "fresh & nothing to fix" car is hard to come by. There has to be at least SOMETHING that needs to be fixed.
