Btw, has anyone driven a Peugeot 301? This will turn heads, and has enough French quirkiness to be different from the crowd. However, I havent driven one yet so I have no opinion on how it drives. It is quite new locally.

I was expecting the "overpriced" part, Euro import kasi. I feel the same for the Volkswagens here. Very bare yung mga sub 1M na VW dito, they look much cheaper than the japanese competition.

However, i see the dilemma the importer faced here. Either they put generous standard equipment and raise the price further up, OR strip it down to be able to keep the price close to the Asian competition. Obviously they chose the second option. At the end of the day, its for the most part due to the tax overhead that goes to the frickin Customs.

But again, i havent driven any of those budget Euro subcompacts yet, maybe they have their sort of charm in some ways.

When the Mazda 3 went out in the middle of last year, it gave me second thoughts when I got the Altis a few months earlier. But now, I think the Altis is and will always be a safe choice. My regret now though was, I should have gone for the 1.6V instead of cheapening out by getting a G.

+1, I liked the 1.6V that comes with start/stop buttons.
btw I always read that " Altis is a safe choice? what exactly do you mean? are Mz3, Sylphy, ford etc...not safe brands???

Two mode cruise control, Bluetooth, stability control, steering controls, parking sensors, etc.

Not bad considering it's only a bit more than the Accent.

Also, size-wise, it has a longer wheelbase than any subcompact. 2652mm. The big boy in the class, the City, is at 2600. The Corolla is 2670.

The Pug is also wider than all the other small cars. And it has a 500 liter boot. It's more an intermediate size than a small car, really.

Considering ALL diesel sedans carry a price premium, the HDI 301 is actually okay.

    The gas variant, though... Uh...

Finally a comment on the 301 with objectivity. Thanks for the enlightenment.

For the general public / non-car enthusiasts, Toyota is a more reliable brand than the others. Cheaper parts, easy to find parts, great resale value, etc.

saw two videos of 1.6cvt accelerating to 100 in less than 10seconds... I wonder if the manual can beat that.

I'm pretty skeptic about the sub-10s YouTube videos because I've driven the Altis and it doesn't feel like it can do it under 10 sec. Maybe 10-11 sec on a good launch.

I also doubt that the CVT is faster than the MT, because you can launch the MT at 4,000 rpm for maximum torque (and lots of tire screech), while you're limited to what the computer will let you have on the CVT.

    Videos don't prove nothing.

Those are hand-filmed videos translated to Youtube. There's no guarantee the video speed is the same, especially given that Youtube applies its own compression and correction factors.

That's not to mention the fact that speedometers almost always lie. Stock speedometers are anything from 5-10 km/h off... sometimes even higher. And they're always slower than the actual road speed. They're designed that way.

    -

I've tested the 1.6 CVT via a GPS-based RaceLogic V-Box with 10Hz accuracy (down to the nearest 1/10th second), and there's no way that's getting anywhere close to 9 seconds.

    -

The 2.0 CVT can do it in about 9 seconds flat. With a lovely tire-screeching take-off.

Unless the 1.6V can lay down ten-foot rubber stripes off the line... nope. Not going to happen. Good luck finding any video showing 1.6 CVTs doing burnouts on dry tarmac.

Finally drove the 1.6 AT 301. Yeah... more toys than the diesel. Nicer inside. Very quiet. Very smooth.

Still not sure I'd pay over a million for it, but the Peugeot guys say they actually sold out their first allotment... that's both diesel and gasoline.

Personally, I'd still go for the diesel, but I can see why some people would consider buying the gasoline version.

More or less that's the same price we were quoted for a G CVT a few weeks ago (via fleet pricing as well).
