I noticed most who recommended to get surplus are actually in the market (not for 4 wheelers, which I am) but for 10 wheelers, ie . Isuzu Giga, Forward, etc... In cases like that, one has no other choice but to get surplus units. If I'm not mistaken, the only brand new units around are Chinese brands.

How about surplus 4 wheelers? Anyone with good experience with these?

Also I noticed surplus vans come with very high cargo cab. This is a problem since the highway system here charges based on vehicle height. Anything over 7ft in height, are classified as CLASS B, which is double the cost of CLASS A. We do lots of highway trips so this affects our cost.

Probably still go with brand new since these units will be used for the long term. I'm wary of recommending to the company on getting surplus then if it keeps on breaking down my reputation might be on the line. We still have 20+ year old L300s at 298,xxx Kms and still going.

OTEP is also right about the flooded units from Japan as well as the radiation fallout. With the amount of reconditioning these sellers do, its just about possible to cover things up like nothing happened. These two issues just compounds the number of things would be buyers have to watch out for.

We have 2 surplus 4 wheelers all Isuzu also because of thee same reason given by Boybi in his latest post. But if I am to buy now, I'll get a mitsubishi.

Been using Japan surplus trucks since my dad started the business. And all are Isuzus. The trick is to buy only from trusted/reputable sellers and you'll never have a problem with your trucks aside from the wear and tear parts. Some will say swertehan ang pagbili ng surplus. And this is true. So even if you'll buy from a reputable seller, always bring your trusted mechanic to properly inspect the truck before purchasing.
yes swertehan nga. meron laspag meron sariwa. swerte ka pag nakapili ka ng sariwa. parang bumili ka ng brand new sa presyong surplus

meron mga customer magaling talaga maghanap ng sariwa. di sila bumibili ng recon. gusto nila makita as-is. and they buy as-is

I just bought a 10-wheeler Isuzu Giga wingvan (6WA1) last week. Grabe na rin ang cost ng surplus trucks now. Almost twice the cost na compared to the last time I bought one.
ya laki ng tinaas. lakas kasi ng yen

There was a time they were using Land Cruiser transmissions and other bits. Not sure what they currently have now.

Naku! mukhang patay ka sa parts nyan after 5 years, parang yung mga Mazda trucks namin noon, hirap makakuha ng piyesa outside of the casa (Francisco Motors was still existing then). Kaya isa isa binenta namin yung mga Mazda then gradually replaced it with Isuzus and Canters. Naalala ko pa yung last na Mazda na binenta namin which had an Isuzu engine from new (4BD1, dunno why pero yun na daw ang makina pagkakuha pa lang sa casa) Dahil Isuzu ang makina mas tumagal yun sa amin than the others, di kasi kami hirap pag sa makina ang diprensya, but then the final blow was when the oil seal sa may bandang bearing sa gulong bumigay, wala kaming mahanap kahit saang auto supply, we can't go to the casa anymore since Francisco Motors had shut down by then, finally nakahanap din sa mga bearing specialist sa Maynila ( sa Masangkay ata yun), although mura lang naman yung piyesa binenta na rin namin after that coz it isn't worth the hassle anymore. We bought our first surplus Isuzu Forward to replace it.

Toyota did not tap into the Philippine truck market kasi so parts for the Hino Dutro would not be easy to find outside of the casa. I find it rather odd though; why is it that there are almost no Japan surplus Toyota Dyna's and Hino Dutro's being brought here?
