Best bang for your buck would be to install a custom turbocharger with intercooler. It would bring the performance of the car to somewhat more "acceptable" levels.

You can try the most basic of engine mods: Intake/Headers/Exhaust.
Better breathing for your engine, and a preparatory step for any other mods you might plan to do (e.g. turbos)

Turbo.
The basic intake-headers-exhaust route has the downside of optimizing your car's upper power range by sacrificing some low end torque. With a manual car, getting around the torque hole is a double-clutch or downshift away. With an automatic, you have to ride it out.
Have a look underneath. If the 2.0 shares the same basic transmission with the 2.5 Turbo engine, then you can probably safely turbocharge the car. A lot of local shops can do this for you within 100,000 - 200,000 bucks.
