1.6 Civic VTi versus 1.6 Altis

PMS for Civic 2.0 AT / 10,000 kms (P5,000-7,000) Two years on March, not a single major part has been replaced, except battery. 8,000+ kms already. Fully Synth oil. Casa maintained, acquired brand new * Honda Kalookan. Inclusive of rustproofing.

PMS for Altis 1.6 AT / 5,000 kms (P2500-P3500). Three years already with me, one year with the original owner, 12,000+ kms. already. not a single major part has been replaced except battery. Casa-maintained as well (P. Tamo). Acquired 2nd hand. Excluding rustproofing.

PMS for City 1.5 AT / 10,000 kms (P4000-P7000). One and a half years already with me, 33,000+ kms. already. not a single major part has been replaced. Even the 8 spark plugs are still unreplaced. Casa-maintained as well * Honda Kalookan. Acquired brand new. Inclusive of rustproofing.

as a group (toyota vs honda) how about their aftersales service people, which do you consider better trained and more considerate of the customers/car owners. i know honda has 2 major dealers, ayala and yuchengco. for toyota, maybe the metrobank owned casas like in sanfernando, are better.

maybe in your experience as owner of both brands, which casa of theirs' has been the best in terms of quality service and just simply being helpful especially when/if you encounter problems.

my point in asking information is; as any car owner whould want it.

we want a new car that will run good/great for a milllion kilometers without major breakdowns. and in case there was a part malfunction, sana the manufacturer will act correctly and bring the car back in tip-top shape or replace it without hassles (true customer service). we have no issues about the requirements for the maintenance of the car, but it will be nice if we get the one that is easier/lower costs to maintain vs the others.

I live in Laguna but both of my Honda are maintained by Honda Kalookan, 62 kilometers away from home. Suffice to say that I feel that the trip to HondaKal is worth the EDSA traffic. ;)

HondaKal constantly gives an update, and is quick to rectify whatever complaints I have. And I'm quite a nitpicker. Their employees NEVER accept any form of a tip. After a service, count two weeks and chances are, one of their customer service rep will call on you and ask if you're satisfied. They're a bit more expensive as to labor, but if you go around sa work area nila, I think parang mas maingat silang magtrabaho, hindi bara-bara. Madaling kausap mga SA.

My gripe? walang magaganda chicks doon, maski sa sales he he he.
Anyway, some complaints are minor, I once complained that whenever I get my car back laging naka-on ang aircon to the max, nakatodo volume ng radio, at maraming greasy thumbmarks all over the interior. Since the complaint, nabawasan lahat. half na lang ang aircon and volume, konti na lang thumbmarks, at kilala na rin mga kotse ko doon

I've had less than satisfactory experience with Honda Shaw, since then, I've stuck to the Yuchengco's. An ordinary oil change once took Honda Shaw 2 1/2 day, after three follow-ups, (marami masyado raw trabaho.)

Two thumbs up for Honda Kalookan.

Ok naman Toyota P.Tamo. Service is quick. SAs are professional but lacks the more personal HondaKal style of dealing with customers. No complaints except that nawala minsan 'yung isang tire valve cap ko doon, and a friend has lost a Vios' antenna there after a PMS. She never recovered it dahil napuna nya na lang on the way home na siya, and Toyota refused to acknowledge their responsibility.

OK naman pareho Honda and Toyota dealerships, but of course some may have better service than the other. But by experience, It's almost always mas mahaba ang pila sa Toyota. Cost, mas mura sa Toyota, First time Toyota owner and mas mura yung mga accessories nila than the Honda's. Parts, not sure kasi la pa kong pinaparepair so far (wag naman sana muna hehe)

Hmm, I drove my brother-in-law's 1.8E Altis last month sa Batangas, both sa national road and Star toll, parang hirap and bagal nya sa hatak esp during overtaking if the car is around 80-100kph? Kahit naka off yung ECT bagal nya compared to my car (although 2.0 yun)...

If you intend to keep your car for a long time, then you can't go wrong with a Toyota. Affordable maintenance and very dependable. Pati yata Shoemart may spareparts for it. Yun Honda very pretentious. High maintenance, expensive parts, poor casa service, after sales, etc. You would think you own a German sedan maintaining a Honda di naman quality. Mang Pido can do major repairs for your Toyota.

It's just like buying a cellphone. Either you get a common, easy to use, cheap to maintain Nokia or a snooty, high-tech, hard to use Ericsson or Samsung. Yun Nokia may charger kahit sa kalye while yun Ericsson wala. If you want a dependable car, get a Toyota. If you just want to be different, get a Honda.

back to the topic, veed tuned for fuel economy yung Altis, sabi din ng friend ko medyo mahina umarangkada pag mga 80kph... it doesn't feel like a "145HP".

Kagaya nga ng sinabi ko, mga 126hp lang siya. It gets 0-100 kph around 11s, and that's similar to other 1.8 liter compacts, which mostly have 120-126 hp.

Ang 0-100 ng 140 hp AT should be near 10 flat or under.

Judging by numerous spelling, grammatical and technical errors, I don't think C! has a proofreader in the first place. But if they do, (s)he should be fired as I type this reply. With 150 bucks, it should have minimal or no typos at all.

And I agree, the Altis looks really good.

I'm a CIVIC VTI 1.6l owner.
I haven't driven an Altis yet, but base from observation I have read from this forum thread, I would agree that CIVIC's VTEC3 has REALLY strong "HATAK" at high speeds (2500+ RPM). So when cruising above 100 KPH, I can readily control my speeds almost instantaneously (90~130 KPH) in a matter of seconds... one great advantage to suddenly cruise over other cars in the highway.

My gas consumption historically is 13.53 KPL and just recently 14.2 KPL (60%~70% highway). I am totally satisfied with my CIVIC - both in power and fuel consumption.

Ayan, dahil lang sa thread na to bumili kami ng isang Altis at isang 7th Gen na Civic... :D hehehe... actually bumili ako ng 2nd hand 7th Gen Civic Lxi (pinalit ko sa beloved Frontier ko as my needs have shifted to having a sedan) and my sis got an Altis under her hubby's car plan. There are some variances like the Civic is a used 1.5L manual and the Altis is a bnew 1.6L a/t.

Altis:
- good low-end torque and gearing which favors driving with a light foot to keep the car moving at a good speed and encourages good fuel economy.
- engine feels somewhat thrashy or restricted at high rpms
- slightly better rear headroom vs. the Civic
- better turning radius then the Civic
- more engine room space
- driver seat position is high but people near or beyond 6ft will start to feel cramped due to the limited seat roll back adjustment.
- the a-pillars obscure the front view
- annoying beep when set in reverse

Civic:
- picks-up better at the high rpm range and on highways speeds but lacks the low-end grunt... our old 1993 Sentra 1.4JX feels to have better low-end pull than this engine.
- more rear leg room due to the absence of the center bump
- better front row adjustments for tall drivers; better leg and thigh support for those long drives.
- flatter handling
- easier to throw around the corners due to the lower, wider stance (although i've now added 15" tires and rims and a STB... just need to find a nice set of aftermarket gas shocks to complete my desires in the handling and feel dept).
- better stock sound system
- still feels solid after 50k kms; had to replace a couple of control arm bushings though as i spotted some tears on it and the rear shocks are already soft.

The 7th Gen Civic's shocks are really soft. I've followed a number of these and they really bounce on not-so-good roads. My friend, who got his VTi last year brand new, installed lowering springs right away, and boy, as if there were no shocks. It took a while for me to convince him of bringing the shocks to Zee. The bounce was lessened somehow but not eradicated because the shocks can only handle so much PSI because it's twin-tube.

Yup, confirmed this also with my friend who had one... the softness reminds me of the ones in our old N16 Sentra Grandeur. The difference is I remedied the ones in our N16 easily by getting Paraut gas shocks at P1,500* only. The KYBs for the rears of the Civic ES cost P4,200* at the least so i have to save extra moolah before i get a set... I was thinking of having it done by Zee or Cruven but when it comes to old shocks i'd rather have them changed.

Never cured that in the Sentra, either, eh? had to buy Parraults for our B14s (2000 models) because the stock shocks couldn't support lowering springs at all.

Still happy with the Lynx shocks... mmmmmhhhmmmm.. kahit stiff yung springs, well-controlled ang body-motion.
