the Altis J doesn't even have a split 60/40 rear seat (the last time I checked).
That's majorly annoying for cargo-carrying capacity.

i was looking at the Altis J for a while as a possible replacement for my old car (mazda 626). But the Altis J is a step down in almost all areas except for its being newer and with a more economical engine. it's power everything, but so is the mazda. it has no ABS or SRS, ditto for the mazda.

but it doesn't have a split back seat. big no-no when carrying bulky stuff.

i find it funny that toyota tries to segment their different altis models with something as pitiful as DOOR COURTESY LIGHTS.

but anyway.. i'd go for the city solely because of those ULT seats. BTW i know someone (online) who has both a City (1st Gen) and a 626. he says the City HAS MORE LEGROOM IN THE BACK.

    Enough said.

yup, ang alam ko walang ABS or SRS yung Altis J. that's why the Altis E is the better car by far. if I was plunking down 723k, i'd stretch a bit and go for the Altis E.

meron pang climate control (single zone though).

extended till end of February yung promo ni Toyota. 100k down lang, tapos 30k worth of credits for LTO (madugo din yun kasi 3-years) or for insurance. Tapos I believe nasa 16k/month (less) yung Altis E on 5-year term. basically, if I was gonna choose between the two, I'd go for the Altis E manual. konti lang difference sa amortization compared sa Altis J.

and it has a split rear seat!!

(but no door courtesy lights on the back doors.. hehe)

So... if the only choice was between the Altis 1.6J and the City 1.5 VTEC, the Honda is the clear winner, right?

Well..... the City is fugly!!! korteng ipis nga as someone else on this forum commented.

Pero yes, in terms of practicality mas OK siya. Mas matipid, mas malaki cargo capacity, pareho lang ang passenger capacity.. mas safe kasi merong SRS/ABS.. lubusin mo na rin by getting it with the CVT..

I've just finished reading Psylocke's thread about Honda's bad after-sales support. I can't believe they're that bad, considering their reputation! My mind is made up, it's the Altis J for me. Thanks all for the views, but most of all, thanks to Psylocke's experience. Consider this matter now closed

I already put in a reservation for a black Altis J. Apparently, all 1.6 models only come with 14" mags. Also apparently, the cup holders are those small compartments beside the handbrake. Another thing is, it does have a driver's side airbag. I was advised by Toyota Otis that putting tint on the rear defogger isn't advisable since it may damage the defogger and render the warranty on it void. I still want ABS though... and since the J doesn't come with it, ingat na lang talaga

hmm.. that's new! the altis J suddenly becomes a better buy since may SRS na pala siya. although 14" rims are kinda small, it's not surprising considering this is the entry-level model.

Actually Funny about those dealers, they offer free tinting, but don't tell you that if they damage the rear defoggers due to the tinting process, you can't blame them

manilenio, they're just pulling BS. hehehehehehe.

di naman ganun kadali to damage the defogger wiring eh. a simple tinting job will not damage it.

That may well be, but I'm not willing to risk it . My gf's rear defogger doesn't work since it was first taken out of the kasa, and the sales rep I spoke with kept blaming the tint for it, saying it's really delicate and easily damaged. I'll play it safe, I'll just have the tint above the "delicate" wires like a visor

    OT na ito:

You shouldn't really be using the defogger when you have window film type tint. It can 'cook' the film and damage it prematurely.

Blasting the A/C on high for a while usually removes the fog back there.

so both you and your gf now have altis j's? why dont wait for a new model to come out? the altis have been in the market for such a long time its due for an all-new model..hehe i guess to each his own..i would pick the city (or a jazz) pa rin if i was in your position..para maiba naman. and psylocke's case is an isolated one..horror stories? maybe, but i've heard worst than that.

I originally wanted the City coz it has everything I want, and yes, "para maiba naman." I am fully aware that the Altis is stale by today's standards, and I know Psylocke's case is "somewhat" isolated. However, aside from ABS, and ULT seats, everything else is really superficial in comparison. The Altis is a solid ride, with good resale value. Plus, I haven't heard of recalls or major defects from Toyota cars, nor people complaining about their service. Heck, I see '90 Corolla GL's still running well and lookin' good on our streets. Yeah, the City will be "the one that got away," but I don't mind "the one that I caught." Besides, if my gf likes being seen in her J, I guess I shouldn't mind either

Between the two, I'd choose the Altis.

But if you can wait until the first week of March, I suggest you do. March 3 is the launching of the all-new Civic. The base model might just fit your budget.

On a side note, since you're considering the City, why not then get the Jazz?
