In terms of 1.6 vs 1.8:

1. Civic
2. Civic pa rin
3. Hard to say... Civic most likely, but the Mazda3 doesn't exactly hurt the butt.

But the Mazda3 steers better, handles better and looks good. I like the traditional layout dash more than the Civic's two tier, and the seats are very supportive and comfortable compared to the Civic's. I'd suggest you try both out, as opinions on seat comfort may vary.
