This is my first post here so....

I am in a market for a new car. Now the question is what to buy.

I'm thinking between a brand new Altis or a second hand BMW 3 series.

When it comes to porma and the like, hands down panalo ang BMW. Pero I'm also considering (one of the major decision factors actually) the cost of ownership and resale. Medyo natatakot ako sa maintenance cost of the BMW considering its a second hand car.

    Whaddyatink guys...

    BMW...

And just an update... My friend (yung BMW na dinetail ko), just showed me his receipt for the BMW parts, he bought water pumps, brake pads, filters, etc... the parts are comparable to new japanese cars, if not cheaper... yung air filter nya P450 lang, Corolla ko (94) P500 ang OEM filter... Halos patas lang sa presyo... I'm referring to the common and popular E36, of course.

I'm talking about European OEM replacements, which, BMW casa considers as OEM as well...

Also, wala pang masyadong "replacement" parts ang Altis, so ganun din, casa rin bagsak mo bro...

Oh, binebenta nga pala yung BMW na dinetail ko hehe... kaya pinalinis... but I think nabenta na...

If I had 700K up, I'd take a BMW any day...

Ganun ba? Nakakatakot kasi yung maintenance ng European Cars eh... My dad has a Vectra tapos sobrang arm and a leg magpagawa.

Actually my primary concern with the second hand BMW, the service and parts issue. How easy it is to find parts and a mechanic who does good work on it.

The thinking kasi is since brand new pa yung Altis you won' t be replacing parts naman anytime in the near future. Bago pa naman kasi, unless abusuhin mo talaga yung oto.

I've always dreamed kasi of owning a bimmer. Yun nga lang medyo umeentra yung practical side ko.

Vectra mahirap talaga dude... kahit naman sa ibang bansa hirap ang Opel (and it's not really a tip top brand in Europe either)...

I suggest you visit the local BMW club http://pub32.ezboard.com/bbmwclubph for advice...

    E36 madami-dami rin pyesa...

Pero syempre, it's your hard earned dough... you decide...

regardless of what you choose, knowing you, you'll take care of it naman diba

    sori, mali post.

anyway...mas mataas pa rin (i think) resale ng BMW dahil euro cars yan eh...may prestige kung baga. the problem nga lang is yung OEM parts ng BMW is more expensive kesa sa OEM parts ng Altis.

i would suggest that you get the altis instead.

Mura parts ng bimmer sa Basics Libis, siyempre mahal pag bumili ka sa casa.

Mahirap humanap ng honest seller ngayon, iba na talaga pag brand new.

i'd get a good 1998-vintage E36 318i (or 320i or whatever is available) over an altis myself... unless it'll be a family car... E36 is too tight especially in the back seat imo

altis din ako. cant go wrong with a brand new car... unless its a lemon, but thats a whole different story hehe

and like a previous post said, mahirap na maghanap ng honest na nagbebenta ng 2nd hand. malay mo, may engine probs. na yung bimmer or it was involved in a major accident, but the seller's hiding these info from you.

of course, when buying a used car, kailangan ok yung condition ng car (confirmed by a thorough personal/professional inspection of the car), needless to say.

the best kung kilala mo yung may-ari or you can be fairly sure na alaga yung car (like if you're buying it from a trustworthy member of the bmw club of the philippines, for example)

go for the brand new, para wala kang worry dahil pag 2nd hand di mo alam kung ano na ang bibigay na parts.

If you can trust the seller and his maintenance of the BMW, then why not. But personally, i'd go for the Altis coz it's brand new, and Toyota is known for its durability.

let me appeal to your less practical side...

lifelong dream mo pala eh....how old are you now? you only live once!

the other posters' comments about cost of ownership and reliability are a fact - but if you're the kind of person who doesn't think of a car as point A to B without breaking down, but as a toy - then get the car that makes you hurry up to prepare for work/school so you can start driving it!! :D :D :D

I had the same decision 2 years ago - I went with my heart instead of my brain and no regrets - of course, naka-warranty pa ako so baka magbago isip ko in 2 years

Personally I'd get the Bimmer. Five years down the road, lumang model na yung Altis. Yung BMW, BMW prestige pa din. Parang GEN I Pajero din iyan, hindi tumatanda. 1990 pa kami bumibili ng 2nd hand. Wala pang bad experience up to now. Yung 1996 Pajero ko binili last year. Ok pa rin up to now. It was either that or a Honda City.

It depends on what youre after. If youre going colonial then go for the Bimmer :D Unless its a 316i, which my dad thoroughly hates hehehe :D If you want the BMW, make sure its at least a 318i.

BMWs are more expensive indeed to maintain vs other Teutons, namely MBs. Yung regular wear and tear parts nyan medyo cheap, but have you considered the major parts and hw much they cost? something to think about.

On resale values naman, its pretty hard to compare a 1998 with an 2003. The bimmer went for 1.2M dati diba, now you can get it for .5M. Kung sabay sila, hands down Bimmer ang panalo. :D

If your heart is set on the BM, make sure you know the seller and bring your fave mekaniko to check out the goods

    goodluck green!

..............oh by the way, its corolla for me. I already have a "patient" hehe :D
