There was something wrong with my last point quoted above..
I meant to say, even with a thrifty (on fuel) vehicle like a Jazz or Getz,
you will spend far more on fuel, than on maintenance. Not less. Example, the Jazz maintenance interval is 10,000 km, cost maybe 5,000 pesos.
So you only spend 5,000 a year on periodic maintenance, but you spend 30,000 up for fuel.
So the largest part of the cost of ownership is really the fuel. So even though in terms of second-hand cars the mid-ranged ones look temptingly cheap, avoid them, simply because they guzzle fuel.
But the other posters' point is also correct: regardless of brand, be it Toyota, Honda, or what-not, a second-hand car
will have issues. Tons of issues, eventually. And if you're not handy around the car, various repair shops and facilities will gleefully take all your money.
With a limited budget, image aside, I'd really go with the Kia Pride. That's if all you need is basic, cheap transportation. Unfortunately the image gets in the way.. and most people are not practical when it comes to cars because they are emotional. But you can't get everything, more so with a limited budget.
