How to know if the brand new car you're about to purchase is an aging unit?

Hello folks!

I'll be buying my second car and I just decided to go for a Honda City over my initially preferred Nissan Almera.

I've made inquiries to several Honda dealers in Metro Manila. I'll be paying the car in full and so far Nissan Shaw and Nissan Pasig gave me a whopping Php 50,000 discount for the 1.5 VX Navi variant. Since I'm living in QC, I showed the quotation to Honda Quezon Ave who only quoted Php 20,000 discount. I told the SC that if she can match Shaw/Pasig, then I'll buy the unit from Q. Ave since the dealership is the most proximate to where I live. She said she can only offer Php 30,000 discount and assured me that the unit I'll get is really brand new and not an "aging unit".

Clouds roam my head again. Is it a marketing tactic or is it a reality that if a dealer provides substantial discount, they prolly give you an "aging unit". Sorry, I'm just paranoid.

And to those who bought their unit from Honda Shaw or Pasig (which I think is both managed by Honda Makati), how was your experience? Do they have a reputation of giving brand new but "aged" units? Thanks.

Kung kaya mo kunin yung date ng arrival dito sa port sa dealership, yan ang assurance mo na bagong bago talaga ibibigay sayo.

Kung gusto mo talaga "new" unit mapunta sayo, reserve ka tapos sabihin mo sa agent that he/she should give you na pinakabagong arrival from port.

That is if may "power" ka to do that..

Maybe paranoid lang ako. Baka kasi yung pinag-uupuan (or worst napag-ututan) na ng mga nagcacanvass yung ibibigay o kaya nasampolan ng test drive ng malaharabas o newbie na driver.

Maybe marketing psych din ng q. ave. so that sa kanila ako kukuha.

But seriously... Several weeks vs several days.... walang pinagkaiba. They'll both depreciate to around 90% their value the moment they hand you the keys.

There are a few ways to tell when the "car" has arrived here from the pier.

1) The DENR Sticker for emissions compliance. This has been standard ever since the Clean Air Act had its IRR. Once it arrives from the port, they are required to obtain for each batch of cars their DENR stickers. I can't recall if this comes first before being issued a conduction sticker.

2) There are some dealers who don't care in "cleaning up" all the paper clutter inside the vehicle and you will find pieces of paper indicating when the vehicles passed checklist (usually from port of origin which is Thailand or China nowadays), when it was shipped locally or when it was received by your dealer =)

3) The manufacturing date of the tires installed with your car. If it is 2 years old or more, then I tend not to want the tires specifically. But that's also due to how many miles our cars are driven. For the standard tires, clocking 30-40k kms within 6 years period is very much doable. For the thicker or harder wear tires like Duelers or Eco Tires which can last 60k to 75k kms sometimes, I'll be forced to replace them at the 6 year mark even before wearing them out. So case to case whether I'd accept tires at that age. =)

#2 is dependent on how much they "clean" the inside.

But, whether it is brand spanking "new arrival", or it has been sitting in storage/warehouse, as long as it hasn't clocked in a lot of kilometers/miles and they stored it properly, I personally have no qualms about it, just want them to do due diligence in cleaning and filling up fluids before they deliver to me. =)

Sorry peeps for my error. I wrote Nissan instead of Honda dealer site on my initial post. Nahumaling kasi ako ng matagal kay Nissan Almera . Will make reservation sa Honda Shaw this week na. Hopefully I'll get the unit 22nd of May. Excited much.

Thank you sa lahat. To sum up, I'll do the following suggested checks:

a) Seat belt seal, if nakaattach pa
b) Conduction sticker and other regulatory papers (e.. yung DENR chuchu)
c) Wheel check
d) Reasonable mileage
e) Quality checklist, kung may naiwan
f) Cleanliness of the unit

but i do want to emphasize on:
1. gas, the tools and spare tire.
2. the insurance must already be in force, when the car rolls out of the dealer's.

Maganda talaga kapag ma-turn over ang kotse may araw pa. That way you can inspect every nook and cranny of the vehicle.

Minsan kasi napakatagal ng releasing ng kotse inaabot na ng halos mag close na iyong casa.

...uhm sir, "matatagalan" kasi hihintayin namin may ma deliver ulit na kapareho etc., etc...

Considering they already have your money, or tied you up dun sa chattel mortgage (for those who buy on installment) I wonder if they will really give you a different unit. You know how it is dito sa atin, even for a legitimate consumer complaint, the attitude is: "magreklamo ka kahit saan mo gusto..."

You can always check the VIN of the car to know if it is indeed a different unit. hehe

So tumakas ako sa work to arrange things early on sa Honda Shaw. Para mabilis, commute galore ako. Grabe lakas makalaspag ng haring araw. Niways, just got my updated quotation kanina. Already paid reservation fee na din.

Kaninang pauwi naisip-isip ko na magpainclude ng three eye sensor kasi shunga talaga ako madalas sa pagpapark. So pinaadd ko na lang din. Around 4k siya.

My biggest problem is insurance. Susko their accredited insurance is 33k! Samantalang ang innova j diesel ko nung 2013 (around 880K+ price) nasa 17k lang compre na. Hyperinflationary lang considering the 6 year gap. Dunno kung ganun na ba talaga magpricing ang insurance. Sabi naman ng sales agent, diretso na din daw sa kanila kapag may claim at wala ng cheche bureche. Kasama na din daw ang TPL which is I think cheap lang naman.

Ano po bang the best insurance with the best price. Well, ayaw ko naman din ng mura pero pahirapan sa claiming if ever na malasin. I think the 33k price for a year for the insurance is quite ridiculous!
