Other option is to ask the seller if you can take the car to service center nearby; one with a lifter so the car can be inspected beneath (you can see a lot by inspecting the underchassis).

Dalhin mo sa rapide. Sa dami ng makikita nila na "sira" madali mo matatawaran yung kotse para ibaba ang presyo haha

I don't know about this. You don't know the seller and you don't the know the mechanic that'll do the checking.

Wala ka ba talaga masa dalang kakilala?

in truth, i find it difficult to find a trusted mechanic who knows his fortuner stuff.
besides, with pre-owned-and-abused-perhaps-cars, parts simply... "break down, just like that, without warning". pity the reputation of that poor mechanic who really knows his stuff.

my wild guess, if you can swing it, is to befriend a toyota casa mechanic for a weekend. pay him for his trouble. make him understand that whatever happens to the used car, he will not be held responsible...

    good luck.

If the seller would allow you to bring the fortuner to a nearby toyota dealership, it costs only 400+ to have a complete check up. Try bringing in some donuts for the mechanics too, helps a lot

Dkamb88 - thanks for the tip! I'm very much a newb in Philippine car ownership. To spend 400 or so in a substantial investment (if you can call car ownership an investment ;-) is a no brainer.

I'm also surprised that new car dealerships in the PI do not have lots of used cars for sale?

Thanks dr. d! Looking at used cars instead of new is primarily my usage - which would only be 2~3 months out of the year.

    No worries
With regard to the used car lots, this is because of the very popular buy and sell trade here. Anyone who can refer a used car to a "financier" can get as much as Php10k for a good find. So in dealerships, the sales agents serves as the front line for these buy&sell people. Anu used car transaction rarely gets to the top brass. I, too, am into the used car trade but only as a sideline. I usually go to banks and ask if they have a list of repossessed vehicles. BDO, BPI and metrobank usually has repossessed car lots scattered around the metro. You can also check out sites like ******* for sellers of almost new cars that they either cannot afford to pay the monthly fees or had to go abroad and wishes to sell all their stuff. Haha sorry for the long read

    Some have, some don't.

But if you get to ask the sales agents, they may have a referral or two for you. You see, some of these agents may have repeat buying clients, trading-in their used vehicle for something newer.

I also find it annoying that there are very few options for "Certified Pre-Owned Cars" locally...

Even if you find one, it will cost you! (although it will come with a year warranty)

My Japanese friends can buy a used car online and have the car delivered to the airport so that they can drive it home! The car's complete history is available to them which allows them to decide one car over the other.
