just like beauty, car ownership is a relative thing. i can tell you my choice, but i am sure someone else out there will not agree with my choice, because he has his own choice.
i wish i can guide you, but i am sure you have values different from mine.
what i can suggest is, get a popular model that you can honestly afford. there must be a good reason why a model is popular....

    things to consider:
    1. what is your budget? including maintenance.. including gas. brand new or pre-owned?
    2. how will it be used?
-ilan ang sakakay? gaano kalaki sila?
-anong klaseng trapik sasabak? highway ba? quiapo traffic? cemented or asphalted surface? cattle trail? binabaha?

but if it were me, i'd get a toyota.. vios.. altis.. innova. brand new or used. i bought an innova in 2005. i was so happy with it, i just bought another one, a 2012 innova..

Kung ako. Ako lang ah. I will go for the best compromise. I always prefer a car with high ground clearance, especially if you have no other car available. For practicality purposes, fuel efficiency always comes first before performance. I'd get the more fuel efficient car and if I want the car to go faster, I'd throw in some bolt on mods. Bring a trusted mechanic that is familiar with the car you are looking for when visiting. Check for mud and rust in hard-to-reach places and see if all electronics are working.

In picking your car, it is important to know how many people will usually be riding, what kind of route you usually run, and of course, what you expect of your car.

Thanks for the advise sir! We're just 4 in the family and our route were usually travelling has less traffic because were only here in Batangas. Thanks for the tips on how to know if the car is flooded :D

Ah, Batangas... So your route is mostly highway-like? Wide open roads with minimal traffic? I suppose this way it wouldn't hurt if you get a gasoline CUV. Since you live in the province where there is minimal traffic, get the manual for better gas mileage and performance. I was thinking if you would like the 2nd gen CRV M/T? It fits your budget and is basically a Civic on stilts, with a strengthened platform and more seats- the only CUV to offer 3rd row seating at that. Though not very comfortable, the extra seating is pretty useful when you need it. I'm not so sure about this so correct me if I'm wrong here. If it is classified as commercial vehicle on the papers due to the infamous "ten cheater" controversy, yearly registration may actually be cheaper than a similar 2.0L 5 seater CUV.

You mentioned you want a fuel efficient vehicle with a manual, tas mataas rin. It must seat 5 people with 370k as your budget. I will include some 7 seater vehicles in the list.

My top choice would be the:
2006-2009 Hyundai Tucson - 2.0 Gas MT (kung makahanap ka)

Seven seater models na pwede mo tignan:
    Toyota Revo (2002-2005 models)l - 2.4 Diesel MT
    Mitsubishi Adventure diesel MT

    Good luck shopping!

Around 2002-2004 models, depending on condition and mileage.

150hp K20 engine gives good power, and though this particular engine is known to have quite an appetite especially with a matic tranny, if you be nice to the throttle and shift early (around 2000rpm), your fuel bills shouldn't be too bad. To give some sort of comparison based on my experience, our matic Accord with the K24 engine (can be said as an enlarged K20) gets between 6-7km/L Manila city driving. It gives excellent performance especially when the VTEC performance cam engages at the higher part of the rpm range, but dramatically increases fuel consumption in the process. A manual K20 CRV, when driven properly, will be able to get around 7-8km/L city and beyond in provincial conditions.

Meron din kaming Revo. 2001 GLX diesel.

Actually kung may makita kang mababa take it. Otherwise pwede ang CR-V second gen kasi you have no other choice na. You may want to check out the Suzuki Vitara or first gen CR-V

Try placing the 2002-2004 Ford Escape MT or 2000-2005 Toyota RAV4 1.8 MT sa list

If offroading is your thing, the 2nd gen Suzuki Grand Vitara is worth a look. There is a 2.0M/T 4x4 variant, rather rare nowadays. Traditional ladder frame chassis + primarily rear wheel driven + longitudinally mounted engine = serious offroader

IMHO the Escape looks the most aggressive and the Rav4 looks the sportiest. 1.8L Rav4 is a bit down on power though, awfully high resale value too. Escape has very tough underpinnings, I'd say second only to the Grand Vitara. 4x2 means no serious offroading though. But its also got excellent handling and a spacious and comfortable cabin. 130hp 2.0L Zetec lacks power, though the manual tranny partly makes up for it, is still inferior to Honda's K20.

Admittedly, I find the CRV the ugliest. But then its also the most practical. I find its cabin the most functional and timeless too.

Sir, are you sure with a 1995 Eclipse or 199* Skyline? Una sa lahat they are not the idea college car kung practicality and cost of ownership ang paguusapan. Sure you get the stares or pagiingitan ka pero in the current case, I won't recommend them. Infact wala sa school namin naka Eclipse or Skyline.

Apart from the Vios, pwede ka makakuha ng decent 10 year old car worth 370k. Here are my other recommendations na pasok sa budget mo plus practical to own (may link na sila to my articles):
    2001-2007 Toyota Corolla Altis

    2004-2011 Kia Picanto
    2003-2008 Honda City
    2006-2011 Kia Rio
    2003-2007 Hyundai Matrix
    2002-2005 Ford Lynx GSi
    2001-2005 Honda Civic
    2003-2012 Mitsubishi Lancer Cedia
    2004-onwards Nissan Sentra
    Hyundai Getz

Marami ka pang choices hehe. Good luck!

Ok the main difference between sa Jazz na iDSi and VTEC are yung engine system. And iDSi has 8 spark plugs and more on economy driving, pang low end torque siya.

About the Lynx RS, it is blistering fast in stock form but finding one that has been used as a daily driver is hard, lalo na konti lang ang naibenta dito.
