Should I buy an Alto 800 Standard?

We need a second car. I want something that is inexpensive, selling price, maintenance, and fuel.

I already have a Haima 7. Do you think buying an Alto800 standard is cost-effective? Or it's just a waste of money?

What do you guys think?

there's a review of the used alto in one of the local car mags, in the past 2 months, basic car that is dirt-cheap..
if you want a car that will bring you from point A to point B with a minimum of frills, then alto is a consideration.

the alto's strong points are its fuel efficiency, and its rock-bottom acquisition price.. its trans is not as silky smooth as the japanese, but it gets the job done. put it this way, i would get one, if my family and i can fit inside. but we can't fit, so there!

we all know buying a used car is like dipping your hand into the barrel and grabbing an apple.. we never know what we grabbed until we see it and/or bit into it..

but if you like to gamble...
have you considered a vios? sabi saken, it's one of the most problem-free cars.... is it a good extrapolation that used vioses should prove to be less problematic than the others?...
or a 90s sentra series 3...efi na, japanese pa, medyo luma nga, but hey! matibay talaga..
or, ang walang kamatayang revo.. super tibay.. gas para mas mura.. the diesel is still selling at unbelievable price...

im a guy with an average built and i really really really really really really really find the alto cramped. nakakaclaustrophobic.
id get a gen 1 vios instead. at least kumportable pa rin naman. w/ good fc and reliability. yun nga lang its 2nd hand.

If you're driving alone, the Alto is a fine alternative to riding a motorcycle. The old 800 could get 15 in the city. Currently at 13+ in the city, but probably that's because when I tested the old Alto, hindi pa mandatory ang E10.

All versions of the Alto can do over 25 km/l on the highway at 80 km/h. 30+ kung sobrang bait mag-drive.

Buying a new Alto, what you're looking at is losing 180k pesos in depreciation over 5 years, (price is around 380k) not to mention maintenance and insurance. You have to figure out if you'll be using it enough to offset that cost. But you can keep the "Standard" for ten years or more. Nothing really to break on a car that basic. And as prices keep rising, resale value holds steady for smaller vehicles like this, due to the fuel economy.

The alternative is a secondhand K10 or 800. The old 800 has a really crappy interior, the K10 is a little better. The new 800 interior is better still than the K10... but if this is a "harabas" car, you don't need to be picky, right? The new car has some extra legroom and headroom over the old ones, but for a single driver, it's not worth worrying about. Buying secondhand means you only lose about 50-60k in depreciation over 5 years if you buy smart. Buy a secondhand Standard and your running costs will be very low. It's not as nice as the newer ones, and the gearshift sucks (new 800 has a better gearshift than the old one, or even the Eon... or even the Mirage...) but it's a great alternative to biking or commuting. ;)

Why not live some and buy a MIRAGE instead? You get better value.

Or buy an older Corolla with the same value?

sir niky, may i ask, just how suck-y is the new 800's gearshift experience? i am used to the sentra's stick. my kuripot conscience is trying to veer me away from the mirage and the vios, into the 800...

Hindi sya ang gagamit ng bibilhin namin, ako. The Haima7 will be hers, safe naman kasi yung Haima7.

Nag-ikot ikot kami sa mga dealers kanina, I like the Fiesta, the Haima3 (because of the amazing deal), and probably the Vios (but not quite. Aha!)

Gwapo ng Fiesta talaga, mahal nga lang ng konti.

Kakatakot naman kasi mga second hand, lalo na sa first few months of ownership.

Old Alto gearshift was doggy. New one is kinda okay. Like I said, Eon's is worse. Mirage's gearshift is lighter and quicker, but the Alto gearshift feels more... mechanical... the Mirage gearshift doesn't feel like it's actually connected to anything.

I think even for a point A to point B car, you shouldn't sacrifice safety.
The Alto 800 has no safety features, it's an outdated car wrapped in modern skin.
If you want a modern A-segment car, you might want to look at the P498K Mirage GLX, at least it already comes with dual airbags. Plus points too for the extra interior room because the Mirage is sized between a traditional A-segment city car and a B-segment car, the Mirage is also a global car.

Pre-launch is at the end of this year. Launch is sometime early 2014.
