Which would you buy, the Honda Hrv or Subaru XV? which one is bang for the buck. It will be used for city driving. Thanks.

XV, for me. Despite its base trim priced as the top HRV model, it is due to the AWD setup and it is based on a compact platform, not a subcompact one. Ground clearance is better.
For what it offers, the HRV is pricey for a small FWD crossover. It sits low also.
Only the two options? If I have that budget now, I'd buy a VW Golf GTS wagon instead. More bang for the buck plus diesel is cheaper than gas.

If he were to choose this diesel variant, won't there be problems about DPF if this is used mainly in city driving? I don't have any first hand experience about clogging DPF so I'm basing this from what I've read.
By the way, the 1,200 Pesos for a full tank of urea is easily offset by the price of diesel against gasoline.
The VW diesels we have here are fairly new so no reports yet of DPF clogging. Our Jetta 1.6L TDI DSG is nearing its 30k KM mark and slated for its 2nd PMS next month.
By the way, the Golf GTS wagon offers more space than either HRV or XV. It is also quicker and faster than the other two.
Other options would be a good driving compact around the same price (1.3M to 1.4M) - Mazda3 2.0L or Impreza 2.0L AWD or Jetta 2.0L TDI. The Civic RS is already priced past 1.5M.
Subaru XV!
"Kalimutan mo na yan, sige sige maglibang
'Wag kang magpakahibang, dapat ay itawa lang.."
It seems that this urea really helps against clogging up the DPF. I totally agree about this Golf GTS, it has a lot of room. It's like a sedan and SUV in fusion, it handles like a car and has the space of an SUV.
Going back to the comparison, I prefer the HRV. Aside from being biased to Honda, I favor a somewhat smaller car so that is it easier for me to clean it. However, I really like any Subaru. Perhaps I always had the impression that a Subaru is always fast.
You can check the interior, see for yourself which of them will give you the most comfortable look and feel. Since this will be used for city driving, I'll go for the most comfortable one.
If you really want a comfortable ride primarily for city drives, get a Camry. I think somebody posted in a thread that Toyota is offering a bargain price for the Camry 2.5G for around 1.35M.
Agree. Make sure you're comfortable inside the car because you'll be spending lots of time inside it while stuck in traffic.
The XV's fuel consumption is not that great in BGC - Makati traffic. It barely gets 6 km/L on the daily grind. Not sure if it will still improve since it's still at 2,000 kms mileage.
The Subaru has great sight lines all around and coupled with the light steering it's easy to thread through traffic given its size. The side mirrors are fairly robust as they can be readily reset when hit by jaywalking pedestrians and idiot riders.
The Golf is the dark horse. My friend has one and he's using it as a daily driver between Pasig and BGC. He just got it last Feb though so no reports yet re DPF.
XV for me too. Was in the same situation choosing over the XV, HR-V and CX-3 before going with the first. Ground clearance, AWD, and Android Auto were just among the features that factored in our final decision.
From the 2 choices, I’d pick the XV.
- all wheel drive
- stiffer chassis
- apple carplay and android auto built in

None. It doesn't use the newer head unit like on the CRV or Civic.
Diba you have a Civic na? The HRV will feel like a step down in terms of interior quality. Dashboard design isn't up to par with the new gen of Hondas (Civic, CRV). It even uses the steering wheel from the FB Civic so it feels dated to me. Surprisingly, maluwag siya despite the deceptively small exterior, but not as spacious as the Civic parin.
I'd suggest the XV instead. Feels very grown up compared to the previous generation. Also has more space which was my biggest gripe with the old one.

Yes sir jut, I have the civic. Haay so what you said is precisely the reason why, kase I kept on wondering why sa cost ay magka lapit sila, yet suv crossover body ang hrv vs the civic, kase nga siguro sa mga sinabi mong pagkukulang sa interior, sa HU, etc ng hrv. Tsk.

Yes. The Civic is closer to the CRV in terms of interior quality. Same head unit, similar digital instrument cluster, etc.
If you want to have the same premium feel as the Civic (a bit more premium actually) plus more space, higher ground clearance, and a more comfortable ride - it's really the CRV that you should be looking at rather than the HRV.
At least with the XV, it's completely different so it's not comparable and it'll be a new experience altogether.
