a crappy headunit can still provide low level signals that can be shaped and improved by digital means. low level signals ie, RCA are the same on crappy and most expensive HUs. tone circuits are what differs in hardware and therefore will have impact in the final stock sound quality. nowadays, filters that are very costly to implement in hardware circuits, op amps, resistors, high Q capacitors etc, can be emulated now in digital. so DSP is your saviour for cost effective solution. you can buy an all in one DSP + amplifier + plug and play harnesses to soup up stock head unit to tailor your own sound. you will be surprised because software approach is getting more sophisticated and can easily rival what was implemented in very costly hardware upgrade on HUs, seps, amplifiers, stock speakers etc.
