half is paid to the government, that means around 1.9Million dollars, then makihati pa raw ang old chinese team niya sa naiwang 50%! kawawa talaga si yao ming, naging produkto ng china, literally. Then on his 2nd year onwards, mas mataas pa ang annual salary niya.:mad: :confused:

also, additional info for all:

chinese athletes are trained since their childhood (less than 10 yrs old) and not selected through try-outs, but there might be exceptions. so imagine nyo nalang how much time, money and effort was spent for these athletes. kaya hindi pwedeng basta basta nalang iiwanan ang chinese government dahil may nakita silang brighter opportunity.

ibang iba si yao ming kay wang zhi zhi. Ang chismis kay wang sa 1st year pa lang niya sa nba, nakalimutan na niya lahat ng tinuro sa kanya, about health and mental discipline. Puro steak na daw ang kinakain, di na daw nag exercise the way athletes do, tapos nagustuhan ang night life, all things that they did not experience in China. And their basketball talent is far apart. Mas magaling talaga si Yao both on and off the court. IF Yao decides to do a Wang and reneges on the pre arranged condition on his playing in the NBA (which I doubt because of his self discipline), it will be when his talent is on the downslide already, and it will be more on surviving in the nba.

And Wang's case is not the first basketball player that defied their "calling". Before Wang, may isa pang player that tried out for the nba (sa clippers) and almost made it, in fact nakalaro na sa pbl dito sa pinas as an import (Iforgot the name), so it does and can happen, exception to the rule lang nga. Yao may be one of those who knows how to recognize and give respect to his existence.

Boybi, tungkol sa sinabi mong as young as 10 years old, they even do that even younger. In the case of Yao, I think fixed marriage ang parents nila, kasi both basketball players ang parents niya, parang ganun ka long term magplano ang mainland chinese so it is possible that even before yao was born, parang genetic selection na ginagawa ng chinese.

The nba gets players because they are worthy of playing in the nba, not because they are targetting a huge potential market that is China. Kung ganun ang plano nila, the NBA would have given Wang the benefit of such plan, being the first mainland chinese to play in the nba, which obviously did not happen.

the NBA is definitely a profit oriented organization, and as such, they have been long salivating to penetrate the huge chinese market. yes, the nba is already popular before yao ming, but only on viewership, and not product sales. both the chinese government and nba knew that they made a mistake with wang zhi zhi. and that was corrected with yao ming. wang was not supported by the chinese government, but also did not prevent him, in his bid to play in the nba. definitely, without the government's support, he will not be popular in china (all the TV stations and newspapers in china are government owned). yao ming, who was represented by the chinese government in his deal with the nba, became very very popular in china. his name and face was all over the TV and newspapers. even those not into basketball became proud of him. he was even cheered by the mere sight of him holding the ball! his TV commercials were allowed to be aired in china, thus, almost everyone in china (even hong kong and taiwan) were buying the products he endorses.

and also, did you know that yao ming must play with the chinese national team when he is needed, especially in the olympics? even if the regular season in the nba is ongoing! ang hindi ko lang alam is kung tuloy pa rin ang salary nya with his team kahit wala sya.

boybi, yup i know he is required to join the national team, that's one of the conditions. His salary I believe is guaranteed, so ma injured sa o hindi, bayad siya, so much more if he plays somewhere else. Houston knows as it was part of the deal. Obviously, Yao is no Wang, even if the chinese learned from their experience with Wang. That's very obvious as Yao has taken his popularity quite well, unlike Wang, parang nakawala sa kulungan. I don't think if the nba and the chinese government handled Wang's case any better that it would be a significant success for both as Wang was never in the same caliber as Yao. When Yao was still new with the Chinese juniors, there were already talks that he was NBA material. And you are right, this time, the Yao situation was handled better because of what happened in the past with Wang. Mapapansin mo rin that Yao's parents are regulars at his games, thus providing a balancing presence for him.
And hey, even with only part of the salary going to him, it's still at least several million percent more than he would be getting playing in the chinese league.

Oh ho-ho... The whole point of the NBA is generating money... Money is made by marketing... More people watching, more audiences will see the brands advertised on TV... No money, no league. end of story... Wang isn't as talented as a player, but his team consistenly beats Yao's Sharks in CBL. Yao should've entered the NBA before Wang but contracts with the Sharks didn't go well.
