This thread is inspired by this one, detailing "the sweet spot" speed and what it depends on.

We all know that engines have an optimal RPM range in regards to fuel consumption, and therefore each car (and by that I mean each particular model/engine/transmission/wheel-combo) has a "cruising speed", which is the speed that gives you the highest possible fuel efficiency. Exceed it, and your fuel consumption tends to rise quite steeply.

For example, this graph supposedly shows the relation between fuel speed and fuel consumption of the average car (in the US? it's supposedly from some study by the US Department of Energy). It indicates that 55MPH (88.5 km/h) is the most efficient speed for the aforementioned 'average car'. In reality it's more complex than that, with peaks and valleys in the graph, and sometimes multiple optimal speeds.

The out-of-city road I take the most has a speed limit of 130km/h, but you can do 140km/h without worry (80-87 MPH in some-dead-royal-guy's-feet-units).

In Germany, there are even roads that have no speed limit, and certainly people commuting along them.

So my questions are:

Are there ANY cars at all for which the ideal "cruising speed" is above 130km/h (80mph) in typical conditions?

What cars/engines are most fuel-efficient for 140km/h (87mph) cruising?

Is there data on this anywhere for speeds similar to these? Does anyone compile/publish it? (The standardized "highway" or "extra-urban" figures that are advertised are tested at significantly lower speeds.)

I suspect modern(ish) diesels with high pressure turbos and a low gear ratio* (6 or more gears) will top the list?

Wala naman, the usual wear and tear. Palit tensioner, belt, damper, compressor, shocks, struts, etc. Nothing major.

Cool. I am actively looking for an e90 diesel to swap my e90 gas but I am wary of the timing chain slider issue with the e90 diesel variants.
