hi guys! i'm temporarily using a 95 3 BMW series with automatic transmission.
I'm not very familiar with auto trans and just keep it in D all the time.
When am i suppose to use 2,3 and 4? Can someone please shed some light?

2 - stay with 2nd gear (used for engine braking on downhills or accelerating uphill)
3 - stay with 3rd gear (same purpose as above, when going a bit faster)
4 - stay with 4th gear (same purpose as above, when going a bit faster)
you mean to tell me for going uphill lang gears 2-4? wierd.Originally Posted by EssB
you should hardly use the rest of the gear settings aside from "D"
Based on my experience, 2 or 3 or 4 is best used in snow when losing traction. You have an A/T, it knows the optimal point to shift.
You may use 2, 3 or 4 if you need some acceleration boost when overtaking as you are literally shifting down as in a manual trans.
You have the same situation in a curve that goes uphill or downhill to serve as engine brake to minimize heating up your brakes and fading it.
You don't have to let it stay that long in 2, 3 or 4 as it is a high-reeving setting and you consume a lot more gas.
After you have done the necessary boost after overtaking, you may return it to D and cruise again.
besides, kaya nga sya automatic, if you need to shift to 2,3,4 all the time, then din na sya automatic hehe
bwahaha...tell that to my brother-in-law, he shifts his AT car into neutral everytime he stops at a lightOriginally Posted by theveed

isn't that done to preserve the life of the tranny?Originally Posted by M54 Powered
considering traffic here in manila, i do that too. but only because i want to take my foot off the pedal to relax.Originally Posted by M54 Powered

easier on the brake pads too i think
i don't know...the only reason i brought it up is because i think it looks silly to have an automatic and still be constantly moving your shifter while driving :DOriginally Posted by andrei
then again i live in florida and it's rare to be sitting in a complete standstill in traffic for more than 30 sec - 1 min.
me too i do the same think. i thought it would also save a little bit on gas. dont know if its true thou.Originally Posted by andrei
i honestly don't know. i never heard that it had any kind of benefit...i do make it a point to tell him that he looks silly though![]()
that's not good for the converter. never move the shifter unless the car is in full stop. it's there in the manual of all AT cars
pero ang sabi naman ni M54... nilalagay lang kapag nasa stoplight (so meaning full stop).Originally Posted by theveed
