It can’t be named M1
This is going to be the ultimate sports-hatch by packing an extra 50+ bhp over the current BMW 130 or VW Golf R32.
Munich would love to call the car M1, but that would take away the glory from the legendary late 1970’s M1 supercar, so the range-topping 1-Series will have to do with a 135ti badge on the rear, hinting to the sophisticated 3.0-litre turbo engine delivering no less than 306 bhp!
It’s just been presented in the 3-Series coupe and should be able to turn the 1-Series into a real cannon ball on wheels.

Hmmm... still too heavy. Wonder how close to an Evo it can get, though...

Actually the 1-series is not that heavy considering its a RWD car.
BMW 130i has a curb weight of 1375 kg
BMW 120i A/T has a curb weight of 1275 kg
For comparison:
Mazda 3 2.3 MPS has a curb weight of 1415 kg
Mazda 3 2.0R A/T has a curb weight of 1290 kg
Based on the weight difference of the E92 330i Coupe(1545 kg) and E92 335i Coupe(1600 kg), the 135ti should be about 55kg heavier than the 130i, not unless they replace some panels with lighter material.
I guess we can estimate the 135ti's curb weight to be in the 1430 kg area.
BMW is known to quote conservative performance figures.
0-100 km/h acceleration figures for the much heavier E92 335i Coupe is 5.5 sec.Last edited by AG4; August 17th, 2006 at 11:10 AM.

Ah... but the Mazda can seat 1/2 more people and it has a bigger cargo compartment. The 1-series rear seat is much like the old 3-series rear seat... only more claustrophobic.
The Mazda has much more overall interior space, as it should, since it's nearly a foot longer. But of course, Mazdas are a poor comparison, as the new Mazda3 and Focus are horribly overweight for their class.
But this is all considering that manufacturer's quoted weights are correct...

It's debatable whether it'd fit... but that's a shame, as BMW's new X-Drive system is supposed to be rather nice.
