paint cracking: what causes this?

i have the same problem: parang balat ng mentos ung paint. but i think in my case e talagang matanda na ung car(15+ years). orig paint pa kasi

There are lots of causes... excessive heat (on the hood), bad mixing or too-thick paint, poor primer, or even really-thick "masilya"...

First of all, is it an original paint or repainted? Malamang repainted if the paint is really cracking like a dried cookie, but if you see little cracks on top of the paint na parang kumakalat then that's clearcoat failure.

Engine heat... that's one of the most common myths there is in car paint cracking. It just doesn't make sense! If you say the paint will fade, that's possible since heat accelerates oxidation, but heat will not crack paint!

If engine heat will crack paint, why aren't your painted surfaces INSIDE the engine compartment and under the hood cracked and peeled???

Paint will crack and break if the primer and solvency of the paint is incorrect... Masilya will definitely cause cracking if not done really well.

In Badkuk's case, the reason is not the paint is old, but the paint is not cared for the past 15 years. If age alone is the determinant of paint condition, none of the vintage originals would have survived.

Even with modern paints, if neglected, it'll crack and fade in less than a decade.

Okay, maybe it's not heat per se... It's probably the temperature differential between the engine compartment and the outside. Inside the engine bay, temp is usually constant, while the quarter panels are insulated. Whatever the cause, a bad paint job usually shows up on top of the hood first. :P

washover repainting can crack later on more often than repainting scrape to metal.

Sir Theveed mine i think is clear coat failure....sa ibabaw ng hood, ano kaya dapat gawin? may remedy pa ba? or kailangan pa repaint na? thanks.

altis: Yes, but scrape to metal will ALWAYS rust.
greenlyt: Unfortunately, no, the more you try to fix it by leveling it (sanding, buffing, etc), the more it'll spread.

so what solution can you suggest to greenlyt kung hindi sya makukuha sa sanding, buffing, re-painting., etc.)? palitan nang bago ang hood o panel na may paint crack? :D

my lancer has plenty of cracks on the roof and the trunk portion. it's still original paint (1995 model). this happened because i used to park my car in the open everyday (no choice, wala kaming parking space sa building namin noon). so it was exposed to extreme heat, especially during summer, literally pwede magluto ng itlog sa bubong. kaya ayan...

forgot to mention na sa bubong nga pala ung paint cracks ng kotse ko..wala naman akong napansin sa hood. tsaka meron din akong nakita sa may rear fenders. may mga dents at scratches na rin sa ibang lugar ng body...nagtanong na rin ako sa hcp..repaint din ang recommendation nila
