August 29th, 2009 02:15 PM #161Hello!
There is only one reason kung bakit mabilis napalaki ng China ang automotive industry nila. It is because of the drive of their own government. Just like what South Korea did in the late 1980's when they produced Hyundai. FMC also started distributing Hyundai here in the Philippines pero naapektohan din ng problem with Mazda and Ford.
Pres. Marcos did that in the 1970's yung Progressive Truck Manufacturing Program (PTMP) kaya nabuhay yung 'Pinoy AUV' ng FMC na nagkaroon ng 'Pinoy II' na color orange na ginagamit sa Cultural Center of the Philippines dati. They Pinoy II evolved into Anfra na ginagamit ng PLDT, Governmnet Agencies, etc. Pres. Ramos supported this program but after that, wala nang support. Though Pres. Erap promoted the Jeep ni Erap which didn't really take off because he was ousted. (Please note that my opinions are only from the point of view of the automotive industry and not fro the political point of view.)
We are doing our part from our end, the consumers are doing their parts also, the government should do theirs.

August 29th, 2009 06:26 PM #163Ya the Consumers are doing their part by not buying JUNK.
If you keep on producing Jeepneys then you are going to die a 2nd Death.
Enough of that 1940's DINOSAUR, let the Jeepney die.
Its already the 21st Century. Look at how advanced the world has moved. For example, these electric people carriers will be deployed in London starting 4Q 2009.
Ikaw binubuhay mo pa yung JIPNEY. Hoy Mr. Francisco, panahon pa ni McArthur yan. TSK TSK.

Agree!
Allied Bank had never been the enemy. In fact, as their name state, they had always been an ally. Dr. Lucio Tan (owner of Allied Bank) is a patriot and a philanthropist. He will never let down a Filipino giant who competes and defeats multinationals. There are just other ways to do things only if you think out of the box and set aside your pride for the greater good.
Now, in cooperation with another patriot and philanthropist in the name of Mr. Allen Roxas of State Investment Trust Inc., State Properties, State Electronics, State Power and State Motor Corporation, Francisco will continue to produce All Brand New FMC Passenger Jeepneys and later on, a new generation Anfra and many more Filipino brands to compete globally. Along side with these are Chinese powerhouses Great Wall Motor vehicles, Zhong Tong Buses, Wuiling vehicles and Yuchai Trucks and land and marine powertrains, XCMG Heavy Equipment and many more. All of these would be based in the FMC/SMC Manufacturing Plant in Talon Las Pinas.
Please see also the FMC Passenger Jeepney display at the North Court of Power Plant Mall from August 31 to September 6. It was painted by Team Manila and part of the program of Rockwell. See http://elmerfrancisco.com for more details.
Many thanks and best regrads!

I am glad you joined this forum...
Sorry for the delayed reply - this is the first time I have read your post.
With regards to what you have just stated.... here are some points that entered my mind.
1. FMC's business decision to invest on those Billion Peso worth of Equipments like Stamping Dyes/ Molds for Mazda and Hyundai Elantras', Welding Jig Fixtures, Conveyors, and even the Dipping Painting Tub... were all proprietary designed manufacturing tools or components. They are not designed to empower your company whatsoever. Simply because it is basically catered to build a particular year model vehicle. How often does a vehicle design change? The business decision makers should have considered this in the first place before making such a move. The move to build ANFRA was the right step in the wrong direction. It should have been analyzed and studied more in depth. What FMC should have invested into is - CNC Machines, Developed and Advanced it's own in house design studio... It's a Pity that Raul Manglapuz died too early...he had the passion that could have influenced Rossauro and Family during FILCAR foundation days.
2. Pointing back to the Billions worth of Rusted Equipments .... One thing I learned in my very small entrepreneurial experience... If you don't own or control the source of your products and/ or services... then you definitely don't own or control the business... no matter what size it is. - Food for thought.
3. Theres absolutely nothing wrong with partnering with China Automotive companies... in fact, I would go for this myself. China has no fuss about using their platform or copying their design or technology - they got it in the same manner so there is really no harm in doing so. This is exercising prudence since you are choosing the lesser evil and a more cooperative or generous business partner.
4. Of course we cannot build engines... but we can surely improve the way we build our coaches - exteriorwise or interiorwise. Putting a nice make-up is purely cosmetics. It's like putting more value to a prostitute versus a real refined lady. I'm sorry, but no amount of expensive paint will make the existing jeepney look any better. Are these white and black ZEBRA motif paint jeepneys the one displayed in Rockwell? If there is another link, please post it, I would really be interested to see anything new.
5. After I last spoke with Joseph Bautista - in house designer of FMC way back... I forgot when. He was already about to resign and was mainly focused with outdoor adventures. I recently learned he was working already in Laguna Technopark with a Japanese Car Company. Anyway... I visited his office that time and he told me to redesign the jeepney to something modern looking. I took it I took it lightly since there is nothing serious with that meeting.
The point it... If the business owner lacks the passion to really build something significant - designwise. then it will be difficult to even imagine putting this country in the global map of the automotive world.
Don't get me wrong... FMC is perhaps an engineering centered company, nothing wrong with it... but making engineering as an art as your approach in design can make a difference. But then again, FMC is not a design centric company in the first place.
Again, FMC was not making a self empowering investment with those MAZDA and Hyundai manufacturing equipments... Should it continue building those vehicles... you will be at the mercy of the Marketing Department and or any Subsidiary machinery to keep the business alive.
If you can have Concept, to Prototype to Design Engineering... to Limited Production to Full Scale Production Engineering of your own Body and Interior components... then you can have real empowerment. Engines/ Powertrains can always be supplied by China or India whichever is cheaper.
I am not suggesting to follow any business model being used by other foreign companies... However, most Chinese companies are able to thrive from scratch. Making your own system is definitely difficult to do. It always begins with the first step.
Now how do we improve Anfra?
Best Regards.Last edited by ehnriko; January 27th, 2010 at 10:11 PM. Reason: grammar

January 28th, 2010 12:04 PM #168Thank you for the information ehnriko!
With what my group had been experimenting and trying for many years now and also combined with your insights, insights from other enthusiasts and feedback from the market, it really seems easier to start from scratch with a new utility vehicle project with a new company and a new name combined with the vision, experience, resources and will power. And of course with the help of the market and enthusiasts like you.
Actually, I was able to get one design sent thru this forum, the one with a red and green color, and I am currently having a costing and feasibility study made by my people so as to find out if the project is worth pushing thru. The important points that we are looking at are the ff:
1. Functionality - meaning we can load both people and cargo
2. Design - not too futuristic and not too old but very attractive to the market
3. Cost - the lower the better
4. Availability of components - more generic the better, depende lang naman yan sa pag design
5. Cost, fuel efficiency and availability of parts for the engine.
6. And some other details.
If you have other designs, please do send some.
Many thanks!
