A secondhand A4 is not a bad choice for as long as you check the following things:

    1) Has the car had a regular service history? Doesn't matter if it was at the casa, if owner has records with independent shops, this is good too.
    2) How is the transmission, especially for A/T or CVT? Does it shift smoothly? If not, you will need to change the fluid at best and the transmission at worst. This is why I prefer M/T, as the clutches for Audis are relatively simple to replace. Cheaper too, as A/T can cost as high as 250k while clutch kit will cost 15k at most.
    3) How does the turbo perform? Is there smoke coming out of exhaust? Bad sign if there is. Ask owner if he idles the engine for at least a minute after hard use before shutdown. If he/she can't answer you, don't bother.
    4) Timing belt replacement - all cars need this, but Audis tend to need this at 60k before timing belt snaps. If it does, engine valves and pistons can be ruined. If owner did not perform this and car is high mileage, walk away or prepare to do it yourself at a cost of about 10k for parts.
    5) Suspension - common problem with Audis over 5 years. If you hear clunks and thuds from in front you need to replace bushings. If you buy OEM cost can go as high as 25k for all front parts, but you can just go to Cruven and have them cast new bushings for 1/10 the cost. Worth it IMHO.

On the other hand, if you buy a 2006 A4 for between 900k-1.4M you get the power and fuel economy of a European car, along with creature comforts, for the price of a Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla. The 1.8T engine has great torque and decent fuel economy (8.5km/l - 11 km/l) and is great for overtaking. The sound system is great and the interior design can beat Mercedes Benzes. Plus, you get the timeless looks of the Audi group. It's worth it, I think, if you like to drive. Less worth it if you are just driven around. If the latter is the case, just get a Camry.
