    hi there,

my 1994 Civic's radiator has a leak in the top side (area where the cap is). a car shop recommended to have it converted to the traditional steel (or whatever that brown colored metal is, similar to the older cars). since buying a new radiator will be too expensive

    i wanted to ask....

    1. it is a common practice to convert the top portion from plastic to steel? instead of buying new radiator?

    2. they quoted my P2,500. is that reasonable?

    appreciate any comments!

    thanks

Please search, madami na po topics about this...

Short answer for you though is to bring that radiator to DENSO (or PM Zeagle here) and have them replace the top with an ORIGINAL DENSO top as well.

Like theveed said, drop by any Denso shop, they repair plastic radiators. Zeagle's is in Makati area, there's also one in Banawe.

The Civic's stock radiator is an aluminum unit with crimped plastic end tanks.

Normally, unless some idiot does something stupid like lean heavily on an overflow pipe, fiberglass reinforced plastic is pretty tough, and the common causes of leakages would be worn gaskets.

Replacing the tank with a brass replacement or even steel (supposing they can actually weld it without using any exotic alloy) would be a death sentence to your radiator and your aluminum block because of galvanic corrosion. More active metals will make aluminum a sacrificial anode. Though coolants minimize the possibility of this by being a dielectric solution, you can't ignore the possibility.

I suggest just buying an aftermarket replacement radiator, it doesn't cost that much for a brass/copper unit. Unless of course you're weight conscious as the brass/copper unit weighs over twice as much as its Al counterpart.

    EVO-V

I am really amazed at the technical knowledge you and others have on this field...thanks for your advice, you and speedy fix are right, i should also consider just replacing the unit if the cost is not that much more.....i will also check the gaskets (i am assuming they can be replaced).....

i have a feeling some fool must have leaned on it while replacing the spark plugs or something like that......
