March 26th, 2007 09:58 AM #1tama ba: kung bubuksan ung radiator cap, kelangang umaandar ang engine para di sumirit ung tubig? can anyone explain why the water doesn't come gushing out when the engine is running?

Sisirit ang tubig when the engine is running because of the water pump.
Even if the engine is off, kung mainit naman siya, sisisrit pa din ang tubig.
Kung overheat and you are refilling, umaandar ang engine so that the new and old water will mix evenly (walang cold and hot spots).
Before opening the radiator cap of a hot engine, put a soaked rag on top, partially open to relieve pressure, then remove cap after pressure has been relieved.

Hmmm...why would you want to open the radiator cap when the engine is running??
Normally, bukas na dapat ang radiator cap when you crank the engine to observe the water in the rad. It's a no-no to open the rad cap with the engine already on, kasi mabilis uminit ang makina (less than 5 mins).
But to answer your question as to why the water doesn't come gushing out when you open the rad cap, it's because there isn't sufficient pressure sa radiator (due to leaks sa cooling system) or the water pump is defective

March 26th, 2007 08:57 PM #6i'm having some radiator problems lately, at naremind lang ako nung nangyari sa dad ko. nag overheat ata kami dati, so we stopped at a gas station. binuksan ng dad ko ung radiator, ayun, napaso. buti na lang di sa mukha tumama, gandang lalake pa naman nun B).
after that incident, me nagsabi sa dad ko, dapat di daw nakapatay ung engine kung dadagdagan ng tubig. di ko nga maintindihan kung paano macocontrol ng running engine ung boiling water na hindi bumuga palabas ng radiator.
much better talaga to just wait for it to cool down a bit. is it a good idea to pour water on the outside of the radiator, to cool it down faster? i see a lot of fx drivers doing this

Dapat talaga running ang engine when refilling after an overheat scenario. It's supposed to allow quicker mixing of the new and whatever's left of the old water to avoid drastic differences in temperature. Not sure about modern engines, but that's how it used to be done.
If you overheat, you are not really supposed to open the rad cap immediately. Just let the engine cool for a bit. Put a damp rag on the rad cap, partially relieve pressure, then finally open it. Idle engine while adding water.
You may crack the radiator by dousing it with water ala FX if the engine is overheated. FX drivers are not really dousing the radiator most of the time, they are dousing the a/c condenser located in the same area. Yung iba may dala pang spray atomizers para naman basain yung rear a/c condenser na nasa ilalalim ng sasakyan.
