i've personally experienced this. the culprit was a dirty radiator... when your driving at higher speeds (120kph up), the flow or circulation of water also speeds up (water pump spinning faster. this is normal because of engine speed) meaning shorter time for the water to circulate within the radiator.
when this happens and your radiator is dirty inside. poor heat transfer occurs between the cooling medium (water) and the heat exchanger (radiator). you only experience this during high speeds only, right? because when your driving at normal speeds. the flow of water is slower thus it has longer time to circulate within the radiator. this eventually will deteriorate if you will not clean your radiator. scaling occurs inside the radiator when you use tap water. this scaling thickens the wall of the inside of your radiator. when this happens. even when your fan is working normally, it will not be enough to cool the water inside because of poor heat transfer. hope this helps.

Sorry if I am hijacking this thread but I have a similar problem.

Yesterday, my totally stock car's temp went up to 3/4 during heavy traffic with aircon on. Today same route, same situation, the temp went up to 1/2. It went back to normal 1/4 after leaving the conjested area. Radiator coolant is new, around 6 months old with 5000 kms.

    Checked the car this morning:
    No signs of leaks.
    Both fans are working.
Coolant, Prestone pre-mixed, level is ok.

Can it be due to cloged or dirty radiator or malfunctioning thermosat? Should I continue to observe for a few days if it will recur or get it checked asap?

pa check mo na lang agad. marami kasing cause ang overheat, kahit na yung pinakamaliliit na bagay lang. remember na pag my manifestation na ng overheat. it's advisable to have it checked immediately. and do not use it muna for regular driving.

Could be a clogged part in the radiator, have it checked ASAP.

Saan ba ok mag pa check ng radiator? Baka may butas kasi coolant level ay lower than normal.

userfriendly remove the device you installed and put all the hoses back to the stock location and try it again. i'm 90% sure that will solve your problem.

hmmm. no leaks right? everything doing fine (including the thermostat)?

it's a blocked radiator. have it overhauled, and your cooling system flushed.

it's not just the radiator that gets blocked. your engine's water channel could also be a culprit (ergo the cooling system flush).

same din to problem ng friend ko..

car is honda eg crossing 80kph and up nag sisimula na mag overheat.. 3/4 din..

nauubosan talaga sya ng tubig kahit full ang radiator and reservior ..

stop kami ng gas station every 10km ..

nawawala din ang overheat pag city driving...

parang radiator, aux fan, water pump or worst busted head .

i think wlang cloged yan kasi may coolant pa..

I think possible sira is Aux fan mo baka mahina ma or may tama na bushing nya.. replace it asap if mahina na..

How about if it's the water pump?- how do I know that the pump is still working okay?

Sorry for hijacking the thread, but my '98 Vanette is overheating when it runs idle (with aircon on) for 15 minutes, or when it runs about 3Km at 2K RPM (no aircon)...

First experienced this overheating after driving the van it for about an hour and then, I stopped to pick up some stuffs (with the engine still running and I am certain that there is no overheating) and drove a few hundred meters.

Checked oil level, water level, fan and fan belts,- all okay. However, I noticed that when I remove the radiator cap, there is no visible sign of water flowing. (Defective thermostat is still suspect).

I brought it to a shop last Saturday and they're recommending overhaul of radiator, telling me that if the water pump is defective, then generally it should be leaking. Have no idea here, so anyone has experience on this, please? TIA

    A. if your fan turns on when the temp reading is half, then your fan's ok. if not, then have your thermostat and fan checked.

    B. DISCLAIMER:i'm not telling you your water pump is defective. I'm just answering your question on how to check the water pump. check your water pump for visbile signs outside (rust and leaks). have your water pump replaced when your car needs timing belt replacement:

    1. the life of the water pump is almost similar to the timing belt. even if there is no visible leak outside, the insides of the pump could be full of rust and sediments or the "mini propeller" could've been eaten away by the rust.

    2. it's cheaper to have the water pump and timing belt replaced at the same time: one labor cost only.

if you do have a blocked radiator: an overhaul would do you good, coupled with a cooling system flush.

you can also try our Lav'Ramon in Autotechnika. It's a cooling system cleaner. We use a cleaning agent to clean your entire cooling system (including water pump and engine's water channel) of dirt, rust, sediments/minerals and water scales.

and guys: use distilled water in your radiator. it's more effective than tap water.
