February 7th, 2009 07:37 PM #3have your system checked for proper pressure first.. have you replaced your expansion valve?? if not that could be the possible culprit.. also have your auxiliary fans checked

Your CRV are equipped with low pressure sensors to protect the compressor in the event of loss of freon like some other car.. At idle, there the pressure drops and senses it two low and shuts down the compressor like its supposed to do. As the rpms increase the pressure becomes normal and kicks in the compressor. On hot days the heat it effects the balance in the system without actually being there to evaluated it, the problem seems to be lack of freon. natural leakages occur over time especially if you never had the a/c checked. Have a mechanic check/ service it out and add freon.

Regarding the ones in bold above, that's not the likely cause. If the compressor has been disengaged due to low refrigerant pressure, increasing engine RPM will not cause the pressure to increase. The pressure will increase ONLY while the compressor is engaged.
When the OP stated that the A/C is only about half as effective while at idle proves that the compressor did not disengage. Though I agree that it's likely that the system is low on refrigerant.
Since you got this 2nd hand, its a good idea to change the drive belt (its cheap anyway). Also...
