hi fellow tsikoteers & gurus. i'd like to seek advise and insights sana from you guys regarding heat soak sa engine bay ng car ko. my ride is a '99 civic vti a/t.

let me start my story last may 1 when i purchased simota stainless tube & air filter that replaces my stock air intake. ok naman po ang performance, lakas ng hatak and my FC seems to have improved also. now after almost 2 weeks of using it at nasubok ko sya sa long drive/hataw/traffic sa kainitan ng araw, i noticed tumaas ang temperature ko kahit kinabitan ko na ng heat shield. naging 3/4 from the normal half, tinabi ko muna at pahinga ng mga 15mins then ok na ulit. minsan pauwi nako, naging 3/4 then mabilis na mag full na -pahinga ulit ilang minutes, hehe. so in my case, hindi ko na po hinintay na tumirik ako dahil dito.

my question po sa inyo, how can i possibly improve this situation so that i won't experience this heat soak problem anymore? kaakibat na po ba talaga ng mga nag upgrade ng stainless tube/air filter ang heat soak?

    thank your very much!

just to add some thoughts aside from having heat shield which i have...

    • SIMOTA brand filter -i wonder if switching to K&N (plan of switching soon, sayang kasi yung kasamang simota filter) will improve heat soak issue
    • Insulator tube wrap -will this lessen the heat?
    • Check up on radiator? -i did this myself and found no leaks on hoses, just wondering if rad experts can do something to improve it.
    • thermo switch is ok nman, auto on/off yung rad fan ko
    • MAF (or MAP) sensor cleaning?

my car is functioning properly naman with its usual route (house-office-mall) which is in short distances. it's just that in long day drives, umiinit temperature po.

    need advice mga gurus

i don't think it's the tube and filter combo that caused your overheating problem.

heat soak is when your performance (hatak, power, etc) degrades because the intake is sucking in all that warm air around the engine bay. low performance lang, not coolant temp problem.

i suggest you investigate someplace else. check if the radiator and auxiliary fans are turning properly... baka umiikot nga, pero mahina. nangyari na ito sa civic ko, kung ano ano na binaklas ko yun pala mahina lang ikot ng fan (aux), kaya pag nag aircon ako umaangat temp.

or the thermostat could be partially broken na. it allows only enough water to pass to activate the thermoswitch, but not enough to cool the head.

radiator could also be blocked. blocked, but not leaking.

could be the rdiator cap not holding enough pressure/vacuum.

could be the a/c going high pressure.

if you want the scary stuff, it could be a blown head gasket. check your oil for water, or your radiator for oil. if either is present on whichever location... be prepared for some major gastos.

^^^ I agree with voltscastillo, the air intake upgrade is not the cause

thanks sir volts for your valued reply.

ah i see, hindi nman pala dapat maapektuhan yung temperature meter sa heat soak. but you could be right sir, when i turned off the a/c kasi noong tumaas ng 3/4 yung temp meter, biglang balik din agad sya sa 1/2 normal. i didn't felt considerable loss of power din nman during this moments kaya nagtataka rin ako.

as for the rad cap, i just replaced it 2months ago (same rating). good thing you mentioned the scary stuff about it as a suspect. nagpa top-overhaul na rin po kasi ako last dec08. palit head gasket, machined shop etc kaya no problem na sa overheating since then. until nga noong nag upgrade ako ng air intake just now. sana nga coincidence lang na nagsabayan ito.

i'll take note po doon sa mga sinabi nyo. time to see boss migs again

    thanks sir.

balik mo yung stock air filter tapos road test ulit para malaman mo kung yun nga

hi. sorry for the late reply, ngayon ko lang nabisita itong thread ko.
ok na po mga sir ang problem re: tumataas ang temp.

baradong radiator po ang salarin. i had it cleaned/overhauled and now temp stays at half after more than a month of using my car. although i am thinking of replacing this surplus rad with brand new sometime early next year sana para wala ng kapraningan, hehe.

and yes, i'm convinced na coincidence lang ng papapalit ko ng aftermarket air-intake (pag praning talaga, kung ano-ano sinisisi haha).

    salamat mga papa
