Agree ako kay Speedyfix. Wag nyong tatanggalin pareho. Kaya lang both should be on their proper specs. Yung Thermostat sa ibabaw ng makina, nag activate yun pag umiinit , lumalamig makina , ang alam ko may wax sa loob yun or any material na nag eexpand para bumukas at sumara. Yung thermoswitch, there is a certain temperature na mag on sya, thus connected to a relay or direct to radiator fan.

    Info about thermostat.

The thermostat's main job is to allow the engine to heat up quickly, and then to keep the engine at a constant temperature. It does this by regulating the amount of water that goes through the radiator. At low temperatures, the outlet to the radiator is completely blocked -- all of the coolant is recirculated back through the engine.

Once the temperature of the coolant rises to between 180 and 195 F (82 - 91 C), the thermostat starts to open, allowing fluid to flow through the radiator. By the time the coolant reaches 200 to 218 F (93 - 103 C), the thermostat is open all the way.

If you ever have the chance to test one, a thermostat is an amazing thing to watch because what it does seems impossible. You can put one in a pot of boiling water on the stove. As it heats up, its valve opens about an inch, apparently by magic! If you'd like to try this yourself, go to a car parts store and buy one for a couple of bucks.

The secret of the thermostat lies in the small cylinder located on the engine-side of the device. This cylinder is filled with a wax that begins to melt at around 180 F (different thermostats open at different temperatures, but 180 F is a common one). A rod connected to the valve presses into this wax. When the wax melts, it expands significantly, pushing the rod out of the cylinder and opening the valve. The wax just expands a good bit more because it is changing from a solid to a liquid in addition to expanding from the heat.

doc otep, did you notice a dramatic change in your car's performance when you put in a new thermostat? my car hasn't had a thermostat the past 5 years and i haven't noticed anything wrong however your arguments are both valid and sound so I am seriously considering putting in a new one.

I recorded improved mileage on the Land Cruiser (from around 4-5km/L went to around 6++). This was based on real world driving and not a lab experiment so other external factors could have been involved. As for performance, I couldn't discern much difference. Still felt like the slow 100hp truck it used to be. hehehe.

agree ako jan, mkktipid ka sa 1st 10-20mins lang mula nung nagstart engine ka, with thermostat by 3mins nsa normal operating temperature na ang engine while without thermostat it will take 10-25mins pra mrating nya ang normal operating temperature kaya mataas idling, depende pa yan sa laki ng radiator masmalaki masmatagal

You can buy per foot then just cut out the shape of the gasket. kung may yellow folder kayo pwede na rin. Manipis na manipis lang silicon para hindi mag drip.

finally found a shop that sells oem thermostat gaskets separately

had this irritating problem DIY'ed earlier today. had a little roadblock w/ 2 loose thread screws w/c i replaced. pretty darn sweat inducing work but immensely satisfying though (babaw ng kaligayahan ko).

fortunately, i was able to finish the whole exercise before the ateneo-dlsu game

One thing I'll do is swap the thermostat for a lower rated stat for the summer, then do another swap for the cold winter (in the US). I already have two stats waiting for me, both Behr, one rated at 80C, one at 72C. Just got the lower rated one sa Delodur while I'm in Manila...

reading this thread bigla ako nagalala, so i checked my radiator, i opened the cap and started the engine, water kept on circulatring. so i'm guessing my thermostat is busted?

    maraming kokontra ata jan sir
iba design ng engine jan sa japan, nka design for cold climate at ung satin pang humid or hot climate. kya may nagging problem ang mekaniko d2 pagconversion ng diesel engine maslalo na pag turbo diesel pagroadtest nagooverheat kagad kaya ung iba tinatangal na ung turbo or convert sa 4 or 5 rows na big radiator dahil sayang ung turbo.
mga ponjaps mautak tlaga pag ang engine e para sa europe,us or skanila ang daanan ng tubig like sa cylinderhead konti lang or nkacondemn ung iba or masmaliit ang circumference ng butas kaysa sa engine na nand2 satin

had it checked kanina, ala nga thermostat, nagulat ako since i acquired it brand new at ako lagi nagpapagawa nung kotse tas lagi ko binabantayan, pero imposible naman lumabas sa casa na di nila nilagyan di ba? i'm thinking it was removed when general overhaul was done

anyway nakakuha ako orig for 480 and had it installed, syempre nakipagdebate pa sakin mga mechanic sa gas station not to install anymore, mas lalu lang daw magooverheat. nung ala sya thermostat the temp would play from C position (hi-way driving) to half(moderate traffic) and almost H in bumper to bumper traffic. now na meron na constant 1/4 temp indication, natraffic pa ko pauwi, i'm glad i had it installed!!!
