I had a discussion the other day with a friend and he said that he does not use coolant in his radiator.

Also he only uses distilled water for the radiator.

He says that using pure water prevents rust or mineral deposits from building up in side the radiator since these are caused by the minerals found in un-pure water (tapwater).

Anybody else try this? Does this work? Doesn't the lack of coolant affect engine temp?

actually pure water makes the engine running cooler as compared to using "anti-boil" additives. Anti-boil additives lower the amount of heat the water can carry.

actually using distilled water is a good preventive... another way is to replace the water in the cooling system every so often so the minerals will not build up over time as you add more water.

Distilled water does prevent mineral deposits since it doesn't have minerals dissolved in it. It also offers better heat transfer then coolant/water combination. But it offers NO rust protection and using it in the long may tend to decrease radiator service life due o rust formation and perforation. Water also has a fixed boiling point at 100 degrees Celsius which upon reaching that temp tend to vaporize and escape through the coolant reservoir route. This would lead to decreased water level level in radiator in turn leading to decreased heat transfer which may ultimately lead to early overheat specially in summer months. The coolant/water combination prevents this water loss by increasing the boiling point above plain water. It also has rust inhibitors that will prevent rust and prolong radiator life. It's somewaht a trade-off but it's there are more avantages on using radiator coolant/water than plain distilled water alone. Remember to use distilled water when also using coolant. Goodluck.

I think some anti-boil additives also have some chemicals added to prevent or slow down the deposits of minerals inside your radiator.

Coolant is important because modern cooling systems have aluminum components that need the lubricating and corrosion inhibiting properties of coolant (usually ethelyne glycol based).

Huwag lang sobra because they tend to 'eat' through gaskets.

i agree with otep... minsan i dilute the radiator coolant with water eh.

    Dapat 50/50 or less ang concentration. I prefer 60 (water)/ 40 (coolant).

I use PrestoneII coolant. Subok ko na pag wala. Kinakalawang ang radiator, lalu na pag hindi everyday driven ang car.

Mas better at least kung may coolant mix ka lalo na if you are just using tap water para may proteksyon sa kalawang. Dibale sana kung yung radiator lang ang kakalawangin, paano kung yung freeze plugs mo sa water jacket nabutas dahil sa kalawang? mahirap magpalit nun lalo na kung sa likod ng engine block ang apektado. So better be safe than sorry

Been using 100% coolant on my 10 year old car and until now, wala pa naman ako naging problema sa radiator. Once every 2 years nga ako mag refill ng coolant sa reservoir. Dont need to check every now and then ang radiator kc di naman cia nababawasan ng mabilis. Just fill-up the reservoir then check na lang pag naaalala or may nararamdaman. ^_^

Yan ang prevention is better than cure.
    Good job sir Wezz!

So far so good. di na nag ooverheat ang baby ko.

aylaisabelle, we have to be a little careful when making "commercial" recommendations. Any knowledgeable person working in this field wouldn't recommend 100% pure coolant because of the fact that you will lower overall system cooling capacity. The conductivity of both fluids are as follows: Glycol is 0.258 W/m K, water is 0.609 W/m K.

Adding coolant simply raises the boiling point of the water but lowers its thermal conductivity. It also acts as a corrosion inhibitor and provides lubrication for the water pump. The more glycol and the less water you have the lower overall liquid conductivity.

The only instances where a pure coolant implementation works well is in heavy duty applications, as in trucks, where there is a relatively large amount of heat being released in a small area, causing the water component in the solution to evaporate. The coolants for this application, however, are specially formulated.

Wezz, if you have to refill every 2 years, anticipate residue build up along your engine's water jacket and the tubes of your radiator -clogging is imminent. 30-70 is a good mix, 50-50 should be tops. 100% is only advisable if you live in frigid zones.

Use Coolant. Roydok said it best. As for the distilled part, I don't really know if it helps. but most coolant have anti rust properties already so using tap water is ok.

Ito ang proof. Nawasak Thermostat ko dahil ordinary tap water lang gamit ko. Akala makatipid.

Okay ba yung Top 1 coolant brand?
mas mura kasi ito kaysa Preston..

    hindi makita yung picture sir

someone told me na ok daw yung Shell brand na coolant.

the coolant actually raises the boiling point of water.

may expereiment sa chem class noon pag nilagyan mo ng asin yung tubig mas matagal sya magboil. Same principle with the coolant. It actuall y raises the boiling point of water above 100 deg C. (pero i'm not saying na lagyan mo asin yung radiator water mo hehe)

aside from that tama sila may anti corrosion properties yung coolant

Gamit ka distilled water kahit yung nabibili sa water refill stations tama yung sabi ni Rodyok... again what we learned in chemistry diba distilled water is a form of pure water walng dissolved substances in it

Tap water may have dissolved calcium salts and minerals kaya possible na may build up in the long run.

I use shell coolant mixed w/ distilled water(30/70 ratio).....but one time ng dalhin ko sa casa dinagdagan ba naman ng tap water ng mekanico....kakainis

What the heck. I use 100% coolant. My car is nine years old and have 170k miles in it. No problem.

Do you use radiator coolant?
