yakanyaw,
before jumping into often wrong conclusion, have pressure tests done on your climate control system. the hi side usually reads at about 270 +/-10 psi and the low side will be around 27 +/- 2 psi. this will tell you the more or less complete story if your expansion valve is stuck open/closed and if the compressor has lost its ability. any trained technician knows this. these pressure specs are used for the R134a refrigerant. if your refrigerant is contaminated or is the wrong substitute, you can not use these pressure specs and the whole system be flushed to remove all traces of contamination. some of the refrigerants are not pure specially if it was recycled in a not so well maintained recovery/recycling/recharging machine. you have mentioned you had it topped off. there might be a considerable amount of impurities and moisture in the system. try to do the touch/feel checks and diagnoses in conjunction with the pressure tests.
