Actually, though it's based on Audi running gear, everything is bespoke and redesigned for the car.

The Veyron is an amazing achievement for the engineers who worked on it, but as the pinnacle of supercar development, it leaves a lot to be desired. It was built to match engineering targets set before the car was started, and engineered within an already apporved design. That they actually got it to work is a testament to the skill of the team working on it.

If they'd made it in the same way that the McLaren was made... where the car is engineered first and foremost, and then the design is molded around the finished car, the Veyron could've been much lighter, faster and nimbler.

That it's already fast and nimble, though, is mind-boggling.
